Big 12 2010-2011 Football Previews: Oklahoma Sooners

Coach: Bob Stoops
2009 Record: 8-5

Oklahoma Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +600

Though the Sooners have had trouble in BCS games in recent years, Oklahoma has been an elite NCAA program for the past decade. In 2009, QB Sam Bradford surprised many by opting to return as a redshirt junior, but he got injured in the opener and saw minimal action en route to being the #1 overall NFL draft pick.

Freshman Landry Jones took the helm in Bradford’s place; he obtained tons of experience and should be battle-tested as the sophomore starting pivot.

The Sooners might not be quite as deep as Florida or Alabama, but they have beacons of excellence at virtually all positions on the field. Impact players will be able to get the job done on both sides of the ball and the support players are also there to allow for a bounce-back season after an 8-5 ’09 campaign – unacceptable by Oklahoma’s lofty standards.

Team Strengths:

Senior RB DeMarco Murray and sophomore Jermie Calhoun are a solid duo at the position. They’ll find their lanes courtesy of an offensive line mixed with experience and talent. With guard Stephen Good and tackle Cory Brandon opening holes and buying time, Jones will have breathing room to distribute the football to dynamic playmaker WR Ryan Broyles.

Defensively, the D-line is in fantastic shape with seniors Jeremy Beal, Adrian Taylor and highly-touted soph Jamarkus McFarland. What they don’t clean up, OLB Travis Lewis – quite possibly the best in the Big 12 at his position – will finish.

Team Weaknesses:

OU must break in new starters in the defensive back seven. At corner, sophomore Demontre Hurst is small (5”9, 165 lbs) and vulnerable to mismatches. The Sooners also lost some key blockers in OT Trent Williams (a first-round NFL pick) and OL/TE Brody Eldridge, but LSU transfer Jarvis Jones should do an adequate job taking over for Williams.

The QB position is no longer a wildcard, as Landry Jones was forced to learn the hard way last season.

2010-2011 Oklahoma Football Prediction: 11-2

In the Big 12 South division, the story begins and ends with the Sooners and the Texas Longhorns. Texas loses iconic pivot Colt McCoy and though Oklahoma also has gaps to fill, the 2010 outfit has a very balanced team in terms of skill and experience.

OU plays a tough schedule – nine of their scheduled opponents were in a bowl last year – but Coach Stoops is a model of consistency and if the Sooners can beat UT in Dallas on Oct. 2, the sky is the limit for the boys from Norman.
