Big Ten 2010-2011 Football Previews: Ohio State Buckeyes

Coach: Jim Tressel
2009 Record: 11-2

Ohio St. Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +600

The Buckeyes 2009 season looked in serious danger of becoming a huge disappointment after their stunning loss at Purdue, but they pulled it together and ran the table to finish at #5 in the polls at the end of the season. The Rose Bowl win was a big step forward for the team, and specifically for Terrelle Pryor. Pryor is a supremely talented athlete, but for most of last season he wasn’t terribly impressive passing the football.

If Pryor can make large strides and the Buckeyes develop a strong passing game, the Big Ten and the rest of the country better take notice of this team.

Most of the major magazines and pundits are predicting the Buckeyes to win the Big Ten, and while I don’t disagree with that notion, things won’t be easy for Ohio State as they must travel to both Wisconsin and Iowa.

The out of conference schedule also has a potential road block in Miami, though the Buckeyes will definitely be favored in that one.

Team Strengths:

The Buckeyes are a very deep football team all across the board. There is no better example of their depth than the backfield, where they are stacked full of terrific running backs. Brandon Saine and Boom Herron will get most of the carries, but watch for Jordan Hall and Jamaal Berry to get in on the action as well. Carlos Hyde is a bruising back that will also see carries in short yardage situations.

Terrelle Pryor absolutely has to be counted as a strength for this team with his running ability and play making ability. Pryor is the best running quarterback in the nation, and can easily win a game with his feet alone. If he continues to develop in the passing game, watch out!

The defensive front seven is terrific for Ohio State. Cameron Heyward is one of the best defensive ends in the country and the linebacking corps should be the best in the Big Ten. Ross Homan, Brian Rolle, and Etienne Sabino will be all over the field this year.

Team Weaknesses:

The Buckeyes defense is very good, but there are some questions in the secondary. Kurt Coleman is a big loss for the Buckeyes, so they’ll need people like Jermale Hines and Orhian Johnson to step up.

The big offensive linemen are extremely talented, but over the last few years Ohio State’s line just hasn’t been as good as it should be. In order for this team to get to where it wants to go, the offensive line will have to improve in both run and pass blocking.

2010-2011 Ohio State Football Prediction: 12-1

This Ohio State team could be special if they improve as the season goes along. Pryor is a huge key to how this team will fare throughout the season. If Pryor minimizes his mistakes and develops a passing game they could win it all, if he doesn’t they might lose a few games. In the end, I expect Ohio State to get tripped up at either Iowa or Wisconsin, but win the rest of their games.

This team is one of the most talented Buckeye teams in recent memory.

At +600 they might be worth a flier for the BCS Championship this year.
