Coach: Jim Tressel
2008 Record: 9-3

The only thing more familiar than Jim Tressel’s sweater-vest is seeing the Buckeyes contending for tops in the Big Ten. The Ohio State Buckeyes have won at least eight games every year since 2002 and played in the BCS title game in 2006 and ’07.

Despite heavy attrition through the NFL draft, the Bucks should once again be scrapping with Penn State for top spot in the conference.

Gambling Odds from Betus.com to win BCS: +900

Ohio State loses its top two linebackers in 2008 – James Laurinaitis and Marcus Freeman and although Tressel’s staff did an excellent job recruiting the position this off-season, the team will surely feel that absence. While the defense also enjoys a pair of fine safeties in Kurt Coleman and Anderson Russell, it also loses Malcolm Jenkins, its star in the secondary.

On the other side of the ball, this team is commanded by super soph pivot Terrelle Pryor. While he won’t have beastly tailback Chris Wells to lean on anymore, the job should be filled capably by a platoon of Brandon Saine and Dan Herron. The offensive line will be bolstered by the addition of floor-crossing Michigan transfer Justin Boren.

Team Strengths
Tressel has stressed that he wants quicker, more athletic offensive tackles. Mike Adams and versatile vet Jimmy Cordle (moving to right tackle, his third position change) should get the job done. Boren can road-grade and center Mike Brewster is a good young player. Pryor is as athletic as they come.

From the Will linebacker spot, look for junior Ross Homan to rack up the tackles.

Team Weaknesses
Ultimately, the Bucks lose a lot of experience on both sides of the ball. Expect the defensive back seven to be less dominant in 2009. OSU is chock full of talent, but some younger players will have to step up to make the team a national title contender.

With a strong campaign in 2009, Ohio State can make it five straight years with a Top 10 finish. Tressel teams are hardworking and talented, Pryor will be one of the conference’s better pivots and though some big names are no longer wearing team colors, this is a very strong unit.

USC comes to town in the second week of the season, which will show us where OSU really stacks up.

2009 Ohio State Buckeyes Record Prediction: 11-2

Two big games will determine if the Buckeyes contend for a National Championship this season. An early showdown with USC and an early November battle with Big 10 rival Penn State. If they can win those two they should be in the thick of the BCS rankings.
