Florida International hasn’t played in a couple of weeks which has made it seem like they have completely fallen off the college football map right now.

After week three they were being lauded at 3-0 with impressive wins over Louisville and UCF but after losses to Duke and Lafayette we have all been forced to re-evaluate the Panthers. Sure they beat Akron a couple of weeks ago but teams have been destroying the Zips and they didn’t.
Health is a factor so maybe the extra rest will mean all the difference from this point forward.
Two key players are no longer on the injured list: Wesley Carroll and T.Y. Hilton.
The first is an underrated and tough signal caller and the latter maybe the best all purpose threat in the nation. What the early season showed us is that when these two are right this team can compete at a very high level. Especially Hilton, all he needs is a couple of touches to turn a game in favour of the Panthers.
These are two programs trying to wrestle the Sun Belt away from Troy. Over the last 4 years they have split their games with the home team winning all of them. Most have been close with the lone exception being a 17 point win by Arkansas State at home 2 years ago.
FIU certainly has the capacity to pull off the upset. They are already 0-1 in the conference and a second loss would derail their plans to continue their ascent from last year. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
Arkansas State
The Red Wolves have been performing as expected this season. Losses to Illinois and Virginia Tech are nothing to be ashamed of and they have taken care of business in the Sun Belt so far with road wins over Western Kentucky and Louisiana-Monroe. Arkansas State was a nice sleeper in the conference this year.
They are a good team and the scheduling is in their favour big time…if they win their home games like this week against FIU.
Arkansas State quarterback Ryan Aplin may not be a household name but he he can be very good. His numbers this year are a bit down and hopefully he has gotten his worst game out of the way already – three interceptions against Monroe last week.
The Red Wolves are primarily a passing team but their defense has been key this year, in their 4 wins they have not give up more than 24 points and only surrendered 26 to Virginia Tech in the loss. The program is becoming more complete.
As stated earlier this is a huge game…especially for a Tuesday. If Arkansas State wins they will have pretty much eliminated FIU from contention in the Sun Belt while solidifying their own contender status.
They have won 4 of 6 in the series and have never lost at home to the Panthers. The Red Wolves seem like the logical choice but that half point is critical in which side you choose.
