Week 6 Utah at Iowa St. Preview

In a non-conference game this Saturday in the Hawkeye State the Iowa State Cyclones host the 10th ranked Utah Utes. College football lines have Utah as 6-point favorites in this game with a total of 54.5.

Something’s gotta give in this game, as the Cyclones have covered the spread in their last 4 home games and Utah State has covered the spread in 4 of their last 5 road games.

After losing 2 of their first 3 games of the season Iowa State has won their last 2 including last week when they scored 52 points and racked up 441 yards on offense and came up with 3 turnovers on defense. Last week may have showed the Cyclones may be better than their stats, as they only rank 84th in the nation on defense and do not rank in the top 60 in the nation in passing or rushing yards per game.

Since beating a legit Pittsburgh team in OT in their opening game Utah has had 3 blowouts in a row and has scored an average of 50 points per game. Utah has the nation’s 7th ranked defense and they are strong defending the pass and the run.

In their last game Utah crushed San Jose State 56-3 and Iowa State beat Texas Tech 52-38.

Heading into this non-conference match up Utah is 3-0-1 ATS and Iowa State is 3-2 ATS.

Iowa State and their 95th ranked passing offense is led by QB Austen Arnaud, who last week against Texas Tech threw for 190 yards and a career high 4 TD. Don’t look for him to have a big game through the air in this game against a Utah pass defense that ranks 16th in the nation and only gave up 78 passing yards to San Jose State last week.

The Utes’ rushing D ranks 11th in the nation and they only gave up 94 rushing yards last week. They will have to contain RB Alexander Robinson, who had 103 yards with a TD averaging a legit 8.6 yards per carry against Texas Tech.

Utah has only given up an average of 88 rushing yards per game in their last 3 games, but they have not faced a solid back like Robinson.

Utah has 12 sacks this season (12th in the nation) so look for them to get to Arnaud in this game facing a Iowa State offensive line that has given up 11 sacks this season.

Utah and their 7th ranked scoring offense is led by QB Jordan Wynn, who was solid last week against San Jose State with 124 yards and 2 TD with 0 INT.

Utah’s offensive line is one of the best in the nation only allowing 1 sack in their first 4 games, so look for Wynn to have time to find his targets.

On defense this game is not a good match up for Iowa State, as they are stronger defending the pass than the run. They only rank 99th in the nation is defending the run and they gave up 131 rushing yards against a Texas Tech team that does not have a good rushing offense. Who does have a good rushing offense is Utah. The Utes rushed for 272 yards against San Jose State. Utah has 3 backs that can all pick up big chunks of yards and they will do just that against a suspect Iowa State run defense.

Iowa State is a good home team and they have a good offense, but Utah is much better, especially on D and they will rack up a ton of yards on the ground in this game. Look for Utah to win this game and it will not be that close, as they will also cover the 6-point spread.

Trends:

Utah is 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 games as a favorite, 6-0-1 ATS in their last 7 games, 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games, and has an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 games.
Iowa State is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games, 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games, and has an Under record of 4-0 in their last 4 non-conference games.

Pick: Utah -6
