Arkansas Razorbacks vs. Texas A&M Aggies Preview

In a game being held at a neutral site in Cowboys Stadium the Texas A&M Aggies (3-1) face the Arkansas Razorbacks (3-1). College football lines have Arkansas as 6-point favorites in this game with a total of 60.5.

In games like this Texas A&M has not been great at covering the spread, as they are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 non-conference games and 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog.

This game may be an exciting shootout, as Arkansas has the 2nd ranked passing offense and Texas A&M has the 5th ranked passing offense.

Even though this is a non-conference game it is very important for both teams, as each plays a tough conference schedule and every win is vital in improving their bowl situation.

Both teams are coming off their first loss of the season and each game was one the teams could have easily won. Turnovers really hurt their chances to win, as in both games these teams combined for 8 turnovers.

This game is being held at Cowboy Stadium, but since that is in the Lone Star State the Aggies may have a little of a home field advantage, but not much.

In their last games Texas A&M lost to Oklahoma State 38-35 and Arkansas lost to top-ranked Alabama 24-20.

Heading into this non-conference battle both these teams are 2-2 ATS.

Arkansas and their dynamic passing offense is led by QB Ryan Mallet who threw for 357 yards with 1 TD and 3 INT in the loss to Alabama. His interceptions were one of the main reasons they lost to the top-ranked Crimson Tide and he cannot get picked off again multiple times and expect to win. However, do not look for that to happen again since Texas A&M ranks 67th in the nation on pass defense and last week in their loss to Oklahoma State they have up 284 yards through the air.

Arkansas only ranks 102nd in the nation in rushing yards per game and they will not be able to run in this game against the Aggies’ rushing defense that ranks 3rd in the nation and has only allowed an average of 68.50 yards per game on the ground.

Mallet will likely have a good game against a decent, at best, Aggies’ pass defense and in 4 games this season Texas A&M only has 5 sacks so Mallet will have time to find his receivers.

Jerrod Johnson leads Texas A&M and their 5th ranked passing offense and he put up great numbers in the loss to Oklahoma State passing for 409 yards with 5 TD, but he was picked off 4 times. He has some solid WR’s, but he will have a hard time finding them with the great pass rush the Razorbacks have and their passing defense that ranks 15th in the nation.

Arkansas ranks 4th in the nation in sacks per game and the Texas A&M offensive line has not played great allowing 14 sacks in 4 games. Look for the Razorbacks to get to Johnson early and often not giving him time to find his targets.

While Arkansas does not feature a strong rushing offense Texas A&M does ranking 38th in the nation in rushing yards per game. That does not bode well for Arkansas, which gave up 227 rushing yards against Alabama last week and ranks 55th in the nation at defending the run. However, their front line D will step up in this game and keep the Aggies from piling up the yards on the ground.

Since both teams feature such a good passing offense the key in this game is pass defense and that is an aspect of the game where the Razorbacks have a big advantage.

Arkansas will come out and dominate this game and it may be close if Johnson has time in the pocket, but he will not have that in this game. The Razorbacks will play solid on both sides of the ball and Mallet will rebound and put up big numbers. Arkansas will win this non-conference game and cover the spread.

Trends:

Arkansas is 5-11 in their last 16 non-conference games, 4-1 in their last 5 games against teams with a winning record, and has an Over record of 10-4 in their last 14 games as a favorite.
Texas A&M is 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against teams from the Big 12 and has an Over record of 9-4 in their last 13 games.

Pick: Arkansas -6
