Both Minnesota and Michigan have a new coach this season. Jerry Kill and the Gophers have had a very tough start to the season, while Brady Hoke and the Wolverines are 4-0. The Golden Gophers are widely regarded as the worst team in the Big Ten at this point, but in this conference anything can happen.

Coach Jerry Kill suffered another seizure on Sunday, and his status for this weekend’s game is uncertain. This Minnesota team is a major work in progress, and right now they simply aren’t a very good football team. After beating the Redhawks of Miami University, Minnesota was dominated last weekend by North Dakota State. This is a team that continues to search for an identity.
MarQueis Gray is a good player, but the Golden Gophers are relying on him far too much right now. Gray has thrown for 591 yards this year, but he also leads the team with 71 rushing attempts and 351 yards on the ground. Da’Jon McKnight gives the team a star wide receiver, but there isn’t much depth at that position. Minnesota’s defense has been terrible against the pass so far this year. The Golden Gophers rank 108th out of 120 FBS teams in pass defense. The run defense will be tested in a big way this weekend.
Brady Hoke and the Wolverines are 4-0, but before everyone decides Michigan is back at the top make sure you think back to the last few years. Under Rich Rodriguez, Michigan was great at the beginning of the season, but they faltered in Big Ten conference play. The team this season appears to be much better, especially on the defensive side of the ball, but they’ll have to prove it against high quality competition. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
Denard Robinson may be college football’s most exciting player when he has the football in his hands. Robinson is an absolutely electric runner who has both blazing speed and terrific vision of the field. Though it hasn’t caught up with the team just yet, Robinson clearly still has a lot of room for improvement in the passing game. Robinson has completed just 48.6% of his pass attempts this year. He also has thrown six interceptions in just four games. The Wolverines have a very talented group of wide receivers, but Robinson needs to make better decisions with the football. Michigan continues to look for a leader at the tailback spot. The Michigan defense seems to be playing with a lot more passion this season. They are still giving up quite a few yards, but they are forcing turnovers and keeping teams out of the end zone.
I don’t like laying this many points on a Big Ten conference matchup, but the Golden Gophers have some serious issues right now. I think Michigan rolls in this one.
