Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Badgers have battled injury problems all year, but they are 4-0 as they start Big Ten play this weekend in East Lansing. This will be a tough matchup, and it should be a great game for college football fans to watch.

The Badgers offense is balanced and one of the best in the conference, but it all starts with their impressive running game. The Badgers offensive line is probably the best in the Big Ten, and they have three great running backs as well. John Clay is a bruiser who gets stronger as the game goes along.  Clay has 501 yards through just four games this year and is averaging 6.5 yards per carry. Montee Ball and James White are two very talented running backs that serve as terrific backups. Scott Tolzien is completing 76.2% of his passes this season, and he has a great understanding of the Badgers offense. Nick Toon and David Gilreath have fought injury trouble, but the two main wide receivers should be ready for this game on Saturday.

The Badgers defense isn’t nearly as strong as the offense, and they recently lost Chris Borland to injury. Borland was the Badgers most talented defender and he won’t be back this year. The defense has been solid so far this year, but this will definitely be the best offense they have played yet. The rushing defense is ranked 15th nationally, but they have had trouble stopping the passing game at times. Last year, Michigan State threw for 396 yards against Wisconsin.

Michigan State

Mark Dantonio will be in the coaching box for this game, which is definitely terrific news! The Spartans are 4-0 and are now ranked #21 in the country. Michigan State’s favorable schedule gives them a chance at the Big Ten title, but this is a very tough test.

Michigan State’s offense has been very good this year. Kirk Cousins is one of the better quarterbacks in the league, and the Spartans rushing attack has been impressive. So far this season Michigan State is ranked 21st in the nation in yards per game at 465.

Le’Veon Bell, Edwin Baker, and Larry Caper form a nice trio of running backs for the Spartans. The only thing that appears to be missing from this offense is a play maker at the wide receiver position. Michigan State will need someone to try to stretch the field and help the running game against the best defenses this year.

The Spartans defense has been much better than they were a year ago, but this will be easily their toughest test yet. Michigan State’s defense is led by a monster at middle linebacker in Greg Jones.

Jones may be the best linebacker in the nation, and he has two quality linebackers alongside him as well. The rushing defense ranks 10th in the nation, but the pass defense is 97th in the nation.

This secondary has been much maligned over the past couple years, and they seem to be weak again this year. The Spartans must get pressure from their front four to help their inexperienced secondary.

The Pick:

The offenses are better than the defenses in this one, and four of the last five matchups between these two have finished with a total above 60 points. I think the value play in this one is the over.

Wisconsin vs. Michigan State Score Prediction: Wisconsin 31 Michigan State 28
