The Tar Heels are a perfect 3-0 heading into their first road game of the season.  They are already 1-0 in conference play so if they can win this one they will have a serious leg up on the rest of the Coastal Division.

North Carolina

UNC is again putting up strong defensive numbers having only given up 16ppg.  Their offense has been good enough but they are going to need more as they get into the meat of their conference schedule – they beat Virginia to open things up last week.

It is reasonable to think that the offense can continue to improve throughout the season.  QB Bryn Renner is highly touted but it is his first year starting, replacing all time leading passer T.J. Yates.  A pleasant surprise has been the emergence of running back Giovani Bernard as the leading rusher.  Bowling ball back Ryan Houston has been stymied even though he has 3 TDs.  On the outside, receiver Dwight Jones is finally performing up to his talent and may eclipse last year’s All ACC season.

The Tar Heels have lost the last two years against Georgia Tech and haven’t beat them in Atlanta since 1997.  North Carolina has a good defense but it is a challenge trying to slow down the Tech rushing game.  Last year they surrendered 372 yards on the ground, more than 100 than they did against any other opponent.  [soliloquy id=”82219″]

If that happens again they Tech will run them right out of Atlanta again.

Georgia Tech

It may have only been Kansas but Georgia Tech slaughtered them last week.  A 7 point half time lead turned into a 42 point drubbing at Tech rolled up an amazing 604 yards or rushing offense – that is a good month for most teams.  Also, don’t forget this was against Kansas, not a team from the Sunflower Conference.  GT may be a team to be reckoned with in the ACC before all is said and done.

It is hard to know where to start in terms of putting those 604 yard into context.  Here are some crazy numbers:  12ypc, 5 players with 68 yards or more, 7 rushing touchdowns.  Plus they averaged more than 40 yards per play on 4 pass completions.  The competition has not been great so far this season but coach Paul Johnson has the attack thriving – and with a new QB at the helm.

There is just something about watching a dominant running team in college football.  More so than passing teams they sap your will to compete and GT is going to give UNC all it can handle – just like it has while enjoying their current 11-2 run against the Tar Heels since 1998.  If they can win this one their schedule sets up nicely for them to be 7-0 before heading to Coral Gables to meet Miami.

ATS Pick:  Georgia Tech -6.5
Over/Under Pick:  Over
Score Prediction:  Georgia Tech 38 – North Carolina 30
