Kent State’s coach, Doug Martin, has yet to take the team to a bowl game in his six years at the school. This team has more talent than many in the MAC conference, so expectations are getting higher in northeastern Ohio.

The Golden Flashes offense definitely has plenty of talent to compete in most of their games this year. While they are definitely a notch below the Big Ten offenses Penn State will face most of the season, this offense is far from a pushover. Spencer Keith is a young quarterback who is already showing that he can be a leader for this offense. Keith has solid tools and he has the play makers at wide receiver to have a successful season. The Kent State backfield has some nice runners as well. Eugene Jarvis and Jacquise Terry are two of the better running backs in the MAC. Overall, this is a solid offensive unit that should improve throughout the year.

The Kent State defense was its strength last year, but they did lose some key contributors. The defensive line will be an area of inexperience this year and that is certainly a concern. The linebackers are terrific, and they should be able to do a lot of great work for this unit. The secondary is experienced and full of guys who know how to pick off mistakes thrown by the quarterback. College Football

Penn State

The Nittany Lions were beaten 24-3 by Alabama last weekend, but that really was to be expected considering how young this team is. They will have a chance to face much weaker competition here and get their confidence going back in the right direction.

Robert Bolden is the first true freshman to ever start for Joe Paterno, and he has made some true freshman mistakes. On the whole, I do believe that Nittany Lion fans have to be encouraged that Bolden has shown flashes of brilliance and appears to be a great competitor. The biggest problem right now for Penn State is that the running game simply isn’t working at all. Evan Royster is the heart and soul of this offense, but he has just 72 yards through two games. It seems that the offensive line just isn’t knocking people ball off the ball the way they need to. Penn State must improve its running game to take pressure off Bolden.

The Penn State defense is stronger overall than the offense right now, but the linebackers are much more inexperienced than normal. Alabama dominated the line of scrimmage against them, but the Crimson Tide will do that to a lot of teams this year. The secondary appears to be ready for a good season and the defensive line should be solid as well. On the whole, this Penn State defense might not be dominating, but they’ll definitely hold their own.

The Pick:

Penn State should definitely win this game, but don’t be surprised if Kent State keeps it closer than most people are expecting. Penn State will be likely be good by the end of the year, but right now they are much weaker than normal. The Golden Flashes have a talented team that I think has a good chance to cover the spread in this one.

Kent State vs. Penn State Score Prediction: Penn State 28 Kent State 13
