The Cincinnati Bearcats take on the North Carolina Wolfpack this Thursday night in a Big East- ACC showdown in Raleigh, NC.

Last Saturday, Cincinnati (1-1) rebounded from a 28-14 opening day loss at Fresno State with a 40-7 win over Indiana State at home. The Bearcats failed to cover the spread as they closed as 44 points favorites in this game. Against Fresno State they were 2 ½ point road dogs and the total stayed well ‘under’ the 57 point line.

This is obviously not the same Cincinnati team that went undefeated in the regular season last season as a large amount of talent as well as their former head coach, Brian Kelly were drained from the team. In Kelly’s place is Butch Jones who is already trying to regroup from the loss of WR Vidal Hazelton, who tore an ACL in the opener and repair an offensive line that gave up eight sacks to Fresno State.

Indiana State hung tough in the first half of Saturday’s game, but QB Zach Collaros finally settled in and even though he ended the day completing just 11-of-17 attempts for 130 yards, he did manage to throw two TD’s. The big story for the Bearcats was their relentless ground game led by RB Darrin Williams. He finished the day with 117 yards on 13 carries and the offense as a whole rushed for 263 yards on the day. North Carolina State enters this game 2-0 for the first time since 2002. In Week 1 the Wolfpack rolled over Western Carolina 48-7 as a 33 point home favorite. Last Saturday, as a three point road underdog, they survived a furious comeback attempt by UCF to hold on for the 28-21 win. The total for this game barely stayed ‘under’ the 52 point line.

The star of this game for NC State was the defense, as they created five turnovers including a 43 yard interception return for a touchdown by C.J. Wilson that gave the Wolfpack a 28-7 lead  with a little over five minutes left in the third quarter.

The Wolfpack offense only managed 239 totals yards; 105 passing and 134 on the ground. QB Russell Wilson really struggled, completing only 33 percent of his passes for an average of 3.5 yards per catch. RB Mustafa Greene was the leading ball carrier with 52 yards on 14 attempts.

Cincinnati is 8-2 straight up its last 10 games but just 3-7 against the spread. The Bearcats have failed to cover in their last seven games. They are 2-3 both SU and ATS on the road in their last five games.

North Carolina State is 4-6 SU in its last 10 games and 5-5 ATS. The Wolfpack is 3-2 both SU and ATS in their last five games at home.

Both of these offenses have struggled so far, especially in the passing game. Cincinnati’s ability to run the ball will be the key to pounding out a win against NC State on the road.

The Pick: Cincinnati +2
