Bet On College Football – Akron Zips vs Temple Owls Gambling Preview

The Akron Zips were smoked by Ohio State in the opener but I don’t think that was much of a surprise.  The score was 42-0 but when you look behind the numbers it was even uglier.

Akron

They didn’t event crack 100 yards of total yards of offense against a Buckeye team that was missing several key players on offense an defense.  You don’t want to make make too much of a single game but this years team might be worse than last year’s that won only a single game.

The only good thing for the Akron offense is that they have to get better from here…right?  The key is going to be the offensive line.  They couldn’t get a push against Ohio State and they couldn’t block for the passing game either.  OSU is fantastic on defense so they should find things a little easier this week against Temple.  This team has no real threats on offense which makes it easy to take chances and create big plays.  Something Temple is pretty good at.

By comparison, the Zips are stronger on defense where they return 8 starters from a year ago.  There was no evidence of any of that “strength” against OSU and the Owls have scored 24, 27, 56, and 30 points against Akron the last 4 times out.  They just don’t give themselves much of a chance to win on this side of the ball either.

Temple

The Temple Owls got their first victory for coach Steve Addazio by beating Villanova – a good FCS program, but FCS nonetheless.  They played a very smooth game outrushing their opponents 2:1 while not committing a turnover.  Now onto Akron, which even though it might be an FBS school, may not put up much more of a fight than the Wildcats. No doubt Temple will use the same formula to beat an Akron team they have lever lost to since joining the MAC (4-0).  Getting Bernard Pierce off to a good start (147 yards, 3TDs) was a welcome sight and QB Mike Gerardi was very efficient leading the attack.  Last year the Owls shutout Akron 30-0 rushing for 190 yards while giving up just 20 on the ground.  After witnessing Akron last week another performance like that might not be a stretch.

Temple is looking to use this early MAC game to jump ahead in the standings and put some pressure on the rest of the East division.  Playing Akron is a perfect way to do so, the last three in the series have not been close at all with last year’s 30-0 shutout the most impressive of their victories over the Zips.  The only chance the Zips have is if the Owls are caught looking ahead to Penn State.

Trends:

AKR are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 home games.
AKR are 7-16 ATS in their last 23 games overall.

ATS Pick:  Temple -13
