The Tigers of Auburn had to battle a little bit in their opener against Arkansas State, but they did go on to win 52-26. Gene Chizik’s team is just about as dangerous as you’ll find on the offensive side of the football, but the defense is still a bit of a work in progress.
Cameron Newton looked great in his first game under center. Newton completed 9 of 14 passes and threw three touchdown passes and no interceptions. Newton did most of his damage on the ground, where he gained 171 yards and ran for two touchdowns. Five touchdowns for a first time starter is definitely a nice way to get the ball rolling! The backfield of this Auburn team is extremely deep and they will certainly try to run the football consistently this year. You can bet that Auburn will want to keep the pace of the game moving on offense and try to wear down the Mississippi State defensive front.
The Tigers defense gave up 26 points to a fairly weak Arkansas State team, so there are definitely some concerns here. Most of the damage was done through the air, where Auburn gave up 323 yards. Luckily for Auburn, Mississippi State is not a great passing team, so the defense might be able to hold up in this one. It will be important for the defensive ends to get some heat on the quarterback and take pressure off the secondary.
Mississippi State
The Bulldogs of Mississippi State have an impressive young coach in Dan Mullen. He has done a great job of getting the most of this team in his tenure as Head Coach.
The offense was expected to struggle this year, but they were surprisingly great last week against Memphis. Tyler Russell threw for four touchdowns and the team gained a stunning 569 total yards of offense. It is important to remember that they were playing a terribly weak Memphis team, but this was still a great sign for the Bulldogs. Chad Bumphis had two touchdowns and I would look for him to be a big part of the game plan for Mississippi State as they take on a tough SEC opponent in Auburn this week.
The Bulldogs defense is expected to be the stronger of the two units, and they did their part as well in the big 49-7 win over Memphis last week. The defense allowed just 41 yards rushing on 21 carries and held Memphis to a single touchdown, which came in the last two minutes of the game. The defensive front is strong for the Bulldogs, and they could certainly cause plenty of offensive lines trouble in 2010. The defensive line has the depth to rotate people in and out and clog the running lines on a consistent basis. This impressive run defense will be tested in a big way by Auburn this week.
The Pick:
Before the season I would have thought Auburn would take this one with relative ease, but it appears Dan Mullen has this offense rolling much better than most people would have expected. Auburn should still have too many athletes for the Bulldogs in the long run, but I think this will be a hard fought game. Take the Auburn moneyline in this one.
