On Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match up of two of the most storied schools in college football the 10th ranked Oklahoma Sooners (1-0) host the 17th ranked Florida State Seminoles (1-0). The Sooners have National Championship aspirations, but they must play much better than they did last week when they almost were shocked at home only winning by a TD over Utah State.

College football lines have Oklahoma as an 8-point favorite in this game and it may be a barnburner with the offenses that each team has.

Florida State is in their first year without head coach Bobby Bowden and they look to get back to national prominence and they can do just that by beating Oklahoma.

These 2 teams have not faced each other since they played for the National Championship back in 2000.

No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners vs. No. 17 Florida State Seminoles Preview

In their opening games of the season last Saturday Oklahoma needed a late INT to secure a 31-24 win over Utah State while Florida State had no problems crushing Samford 59-6. The Sooners were favored by 34-points against Utah State so they did not cover the spread and are 0-1 ATS. The Seminoles easily covered the big spread against Samford and they are 1-0 ATS.

In the win over Samford Florida State racked up 481 yards and had 296 passing yards and 185 rushing yards. Their offense is led by QB Christian Ponder, who had 167 yards passing and 4 TD with 1 INT in the game against Samford only playing in the first half.

Ponder has a few solid targets in WR Taiwan Easterling and RB Chris Thompson coming out of the backfield and in the Samford game each player averaged over 13 yards per reception.

There is a big worry with the Sooners’ secondary this Saturday, as they are not only facing a legit FSU passing offense, but they gave up 341 passing yards last week in the narrow win over Utah State.

Florida State has a very experienced offensive line that is one of the best units in the ACC. While there are concerns with the secondary of the Sooners their strength on defense is the pass rush led by DE Jeremy Beal. If the Sooners cannot pressure Ponder and he is given time to find his targets the Seminoles may pull off an upset this Saturday.

Oklahoma’s defense forced Utah St. into 4 turnovers last Saturday and they cannot count on that happening again. Conversely, FSU must hold onto the ball, as if they turn the ball over it will be very hard for them to win, especially because of their mediocre, at best, defense.

Oklahoma had 422 yards in the win over Utah State and QB Landry Jones had a decent game going passing for 217 yards with 2 TD and 2 INT. He has a big time weapon in WR Ryan Broyles, who caught 9 balls for 142 yards and a pair of TD’s last week.

The rushing attack of the Sooners is led by early season Heisman favorite RB DeMarco Murray, who blew up against Utah State rushing for 208 yards and 2 TD.

The Sooners have a lot of weapons on offense and that is not good for a FSU defense that last season ranked dead last in the ACC in run defense, pass efficiency, and total defense. This season they have some talent, but their two main weaknesses are huge ones in pass defense and run defense. With the D that FSU has Ponder may have to have a really big game for FSU to win.

If Murray has a big game it will help the Sooners control the clock and keep Ponder and the dynamic offense of the Seminoles on the sidelines.

Trends:
Florida State is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games against teams with a winning record.
Oklahoma is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games and in their last 7 non-conference games the total has gone Under 6 times.

Sure, Oklahoma did not look good in last week’s game and FSU did, but that will not matter in this game, as the Sooners will show how good their offense is while keeping Ponder and the FSU offense in check.

Pick: Oklahoma -8.5
