Michigan State:

So this is supposed to be a road game for the Michigan State Spartans? Florida Atlantic was scheduled to host this game at their new stadium, but it wasn’t ready so they moved it to a bigger stadium to make more money. The new venue is Ford Field, which is a short drive away from Michigan State and will be a clear home field advantage for the Spartans. It is definitely one of the more strange scheduling quirks you’ll see this year.

The Spartans were impressive last week in their opener against Western Michigan. Michigan State dominated and won 38-14. The Spartans ground game was particularly impressive, as they rushed for 297 yards and 8 yards per carry as a team. Le’Veon Bell had 14.1 yards per carry and two touchdowns and Edwin Baker added two more touchdowns. The strength of this team was supposed to be their passing game, but if their running game keeps rolling like that, they will certainly be difficult to stop!

The Michigan State defense held Western Michigan to just 85 yards on the ground, but they did give up 238 yards through the air. The Spartans are likely to stuff the run and give up a lot of yardage through the air all year, as they have a nice front seven, but the secondary is extremely weak. College Football

Florida Atlantic:

The Owls of Florida Atlantic have a coaching legend on the sidelines in Howard Schnellenberger. Florida Atlantic opened the 2010 season in style, defeating UAB 32-31 in a terrific comeback last Thursday night.

Florida Atlantic has a solid offense led by quarterback Jeff Van Camp. Van Camp has a terrific wide receiver in Lester Jean on the outside. The Owls also have one of the best running backs in the Sun Belt Conference in Alfred Morris. The offensive line is a glaring weakness for the team, and as they go against bigger and stronger opponents like Michigan State this could definitely be a big problem. Expect the Owls to go with a lot of short passes to try to keep the chains moving and keep Van Camp standing.

The Owls defense came up big in their opening game win against the Blazers of UAB. It was Brentley Harstad’s 38 yard interception return for a touchdown that got the team back into the game and started the big comeback. The secondary is full of experience and they should have a solid year. The weakness of this defense is their inability to stop the run. UAB doesn’t have the best rushing attack you’ll see, but they carved up this defense for 345 yards rushing. Michigan State’s impressive running game in week one will make it two straight huge games on the ground if Florida Atlantic doesn’t step up in a big way.

The Pick:

I fully expect the Spartans to be able to move the football up and down the field against the Owls of Florida Atlantic in this strange “away” game. Florida Atlantic will probably be able to put up some points as well through the aerial attack they have. I believe over 54 points is the best play in this one.

Michigan State vs. Florida Atlantic Score Prediction: Michigan State 45 Florida Atlantic 14
