The West Virginia Mountaineers tangle with in-state rival Marshall this Friday night in Huntington, WV. in a Big East-Conference USA matchup.

West Virginia (1-0) is coming off a 31-0 shutout of Coastal Carolina, while Marshall (0-1) is trying to bounce back from a 45-7 loss to the No.2 team in the country; Ohio State. This game should be a bit more balanced for both teams as the Mountaineers were clearly playing a team well below their ability and the Herd played a team way above theirs.

These two teams have played each other every season since 2006. Last year West Virginia came away with a 24-7 win at home as a 20 point favorite. The total stayed way under the 51 point line. In the four previous games in this series, the Mountaineers have won the all by a comfortable margin but are just 2-2 against the spread. The total has stayed ‘under’ the past two years. NFL Betting

Mountaineer QB Geno Smith had an impressive debut against the Chanticleers, completing 74.1 percent of his passes. He ended the day going 20-for-27 for 216 yards and two TDs and one interception. His leading receivers were Tavon Austin, who caught five balls for 90 yards and Jock Sanders, who had eight receptions for 71 yards and one TD. The ground game was led by RB Noel Devine, who carried the ball 23 times for 111 yards and scored a touchdown as well.

The Thundering Herd were led by QB Brian Anderson. Against one of the best defenses in the country, he still managed to complete over 60 percent of his passes, but was held to just 135 yards on 17 completions. Marshall got very little out of their running game as they only managed to gain 44 yards on 21 carries. RB Martin Ward led the way with 32 yards on six attempts.

The highlight for the Herd came in the first quarter when Ahmed Shakoor returned a blocked field goal attempt 61 yards for a score to close the gap to 14-7. That was as close as it got as the Buckeyes reeled off the next 31 points.

The key to Marshall’s chances in this game is to have a short memory of Week 1 and try and get back to the basics of running the ball against a West Virginia defense that has yet to be really tested. The Herd has to avoid falling behind early as they will have no chance to win if they have to play from behind.

All West Virginia has to do to win this game is follow the blueprint from its first victory. Marshall will be a much tougher test, but the Mountaineers have just too much talent on the offensive side of the ball to lose this game.

Mountaineers at Thundering Herd Pick: Mountaineers -13 ½
