In a non-conference match up this Saturday where the winner will get bragging rights in the Hawkeye State the 9th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes (1-0) face the Iowa State Cyclones (1-0). Iowa has dominated this game in the past few years and the Cyclones have not even scored a TD against the Hawkeyes since back in 2006. Last season Iowa laid a beat down against their in-state rival downing Iowa State 35-3.

College betting lines have the Hawkeyes as 13.5-point favorites in this game and with good reason since they are stacked on both sides of the ball and they have a legit shot to win the Big 10 and play in a BCS bowl game for the second year in a row. Last season Iowa played in the Orange Bowl beating Georgia Tech.

The Cyclones are no longer the laughing stock of the Big 12 and last season they finished up 7-6 and beat Minnesota in the Insight Bowl.

Both teams won their opening games of the season, as Iowa crushed Eastern Illinois 37-7 and Iowa State beat Northern Illinois 27-10. Man, Illinois schools did not play the Iowa schools well last week to say the least. Iowa could not cover the big spread so they head into this game 0-1 ATS while Iowa State did and are 1-0 ATS.

Iowa had 425 yards of offensive in their win over Eastern Illinois and they had a well balanced attack since QB Ricky Stanzi had 229 yards and 1 TD and RB Adam Robinson rushed for 109 yards with 1 TD.

The run defense of the Cyclones have their work cut out for them in this game, as they not only have to worry about Robinson, but Iowa will likely have highly touted RB Jewel Hampton in uniform this Saturday. Hampton missed last season with a knee injury and he missed the season opener due to suspension. He and Robinson are very quick and will be hard to take down.

The Cyclones’ defense may be decent at defending the run, but their main weaknesses are defending the pass and the pass rush. That is not good since Iowa is known for always having a great offensive line. Even though Iowa O-line lost 3 starters they will be big and ultra-talented again.

Stanzi has a few legit WR options and last season they were one of the best teams in the Big 10 at making the big plays downfield. If the Cyclones can’t pressure Stanzi their secondary will have to play a great game and not allow him to make big plays.

In Iowa State’s win over Northern Illinois they amassed 403 yards including 265 passing yards from QB Austen Arnaud. However, Arnaud had 2 INT last week and in last season’s loss to Iowa he was picked off 5 times. Arnaud has to cut down on his turnovers and that will not be easy against a great Iowa secondary that had 21 INT’s last season.

Iowa State RB Alexander Robinson had 97 yards with 2 TD last week and he will be key in this game. There were only 2 RB’s that rushed for over 100 yards last season against Iowa and Robinson was one of them. He will be counted on to move the chains, especially if the stellar secondary shuts down Arnaud.

A big key for the Cyclones winning this game is their offensive line. Last season Iowa State finished 3rd in the Big 12 and 21st in the nation giving up only 16 sacks and they were also one of the main reasons that the Cyclones ranked 3rd in the Big 12 in rushing yards. They will have to play well in this game and especially keep DE Adrian Clayborn, who had 11.5 sacks last season, from getting to Arnaud.

Iowa State is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games and in their last 5 non-conference games the total has gone Under 4 times.

Iowa is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games at home.

Iowa State is an up and coming team with a lot of talent, but they still do not match up well with Iowa. The Hawkeyes will win this game, as their offense will be tough to stop and their secondary will shut down the Cyclones’ passing attack.

Pick: Iowa -13.5
