Florida State Seminoles (7-3)

Phew. It was very close but Florida State slipped past Clemson 16-13 last week to halt a two-game skid. The Seminoles now have an excellent shot to reach the ACC title game, especially if they can beat Maryland this week.

Christian Ponder looked to be rounding into form two weeks ago, throwing three touchdown passes against North Carolina, but he missed last week’s game with an elbow injury. He’s expected to return this weekend but won’t be 100 per cent. Don’t be surprised if Jimbo Fisher puts backup E.J Manuel in the game at some point.

Even with Ponder not at full strength, FSU will field a respectable offense this week – one that averages 31.9 points and 400.2 yards per game. In Chris Thompson, Jermaine Thomas and Ty Jones, the Seminoles have three different runners with at least 400 yards and at least 5.7 yards per carry on the year.

Maryland Terrapins (7-3)

Despite having the nation’s 94th-ranked offense, Maryland has been a pleasant story this year, playing above average defense and winning three of its last four games. As a surprise team, the Terrapins have also beaten four straight spreads. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Quarterback Danny O’Brien has been instrumental to the Terps’ success this year. He only completes 54.1 per cent of his passes but has thrown for 16 touchdowns and has been picked off just four times.

Maryland’s detractors will tell you that the Terps haven’t really beaten anyone that matters this season and you could make a good case there. It seems every time Maryland faces a legit threat, it loses. West Virginia beat the Terps 31-17; Clemson pummelled them 31-7; Miami beat them 26-20.

The pick:

The most telling stat line to study before this game, to me, is Danny O’Brien’s against Miami two weeks ago. Facing a fast, athletic, legit defense, he was just 9 of 27 for 134 yards, a score and a pick. While T.J. Yates did torch Florida State two weeks ago, I’d argue that O’Brien is not T.J. Yates.

Maryland should still score a bit on FSU through the air but the going won’t be easy. And the Terps definitely won’t run on Florida State’s top-10 rushing defense.

I like FSU to expose Maryland as somewhat of a pretender this week. Chin up, Terps. It was fun while it lasted.
