Clemson Tigers (5-4)

Some Tiger fans probably had big hopes for this season as it was considered a coup when Clemson wooed Kyle Parker to start at quarterback for the Tigers instead of departing for Major League Baseball. But Parker hasn’t delivered. He averages just 169.9 passing yards per game with nine touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 54.8 completion percentage in nine games.

With Parker mediocre at best, there’s only so much Clemson can do. This is a competitive football team week in, week out, but it seems to lose a game for every one it wins. Last week, the Tigers were on the winning side. They couldn’t run the ball at all and Parker threw two picks but they ground out a 14-13 win over North Carolina State anyway. The key was containing Wolfpack quarterback Russell Wilson on the ground.

Clemson travels to Florida State ranking 35th in total defense and 12th in scoring defense. But the Tigers’ 333.1 total yards per game gives them the country’s 90th-ranked offense. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Florida State Seminoles (6-3)

So much for the 6-1 start. Florida State had hopes for a big bowl game just a couple of weeks ago but things have really changed after two straight losses. Last week against North Carolina was particularly painful. The Seminoles scored 28 first-half points and got three touchdown passes from Christian Ponder but their defense just couldn’t stop UNC quarterback T.J. Yates.

Yates burned the Seminoles for 439 yards and three scores, leading North Carolina to a 37-35 victory. Florida State ranks 11th in run defense this year but Yates’ big game pushed its pass defense down to 78th in the country with 226.7 yards allowed per game.

The pick:

FSU still allows fewer than 20 points per game. Before losing at home last week, the Seminoles were undefeated on their own soil and hadn’t allowed more than 19 points in a game there. In other words, Florida State handled mediocre offenses just fine.

Clemson’s offense is mediocre at best. It won’t put a major scare in Florida State. The Tigers run the ball better than they pass it most of the time but the Seminoles stop the run better than they stop the pass. Clemson should play into FSU’s hands.

The Tigers have been steady enough defensively but could still have trouble stopping a Florida State team that averages 410-plus yards of total offense per game. I like the home team to bounce back with an emphatic win this week.
