Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. No. 16 Oklahoma Sooners Preview

The Big 12 title game is still within reach for Oklahoma (7-2), but it will not be easy to get there since they lost their last game and have a tough remaining schedule. This Saturday they face Texas Tech (5-4), who is one game away from being bowl eligible and is coming off a solid win against a ranked team. College football lines have Oklahoma as big 14.5-favorites in this game with a total of 64.

In their last games Oklahoma was upset losing to Texas A&M 33-19 while Texas Tech beat Missouri 24-17.

Which Texas Tech team will show up in this game? Sure their passing offense played well last week in the win over Missouri, but their pass defense, which ranks 118th in the nation out of 120 teams, played well and held Mizzou and their legit passing attack to only 95 yards through the air. Also, where the Red Raiders have been decent this season is defending the run, but in the win last week they gave up 260 rushing yards.

OK, so Oklahoma lost last week, but they still have control over their season. If they win out they will play in the Big 12 title game, but besides beating Texas Tech they have to hit the road and beat Baylor and Oklahoma State. Still, it’s possible, but they have to play better than they did last week in the loss to Texas A&M.

Oklahoma has won 35 straight home games and that is not is not good for a Tech team that is only 1-2 in away Big 12 games this season.

Heading into this Big 12 game Oklahoma is 4-5 ATS and Texas Tech is 3-5-1 ATS. The head-to-head betting trends do not bode well for the Red Raiders, as they have not covered the spread in 5 of their last 7 games at Oklahoma and the home team is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 games between these 2 teams.

Oklahoma has the nation’s 6th ranked passing offense led by QB Landry Jones, who played pretty well in the loss to Texas A&M passing for 290 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. However, one of the main reasons they lost the game was that the Sooners only had a grand total of 72 rushing yards.

DeMarco Murray only averaged 3.2 yards per carry and he has to pick up some yards on the ground to take some pressure off Jones. The Red Raiders have the nation’s 54th ranked run defense, but they gave up a ton of yards to Missouri last week. They will likely revert to the Tech team they are, as they will play poor pass defense and they will have to get into a shootout to win. Jones has been stellar at home this season with over 1,600 passing yards with 14 TD and only 2 INT and he will have another big game at home this Saturday.

In the Missouri win backup QB Steven Sheffield got the start for Texas Tech, but after not getting it done Taylor Potts came in and passed for 188 yards with 3 TD and 1 INT, as Tech came back from a 14-point deficit. Potts will likely start in this game and he will have to play well for the Red Raiders to snap their 6-game losing streak in Norman.

The Red Raiders got a huge boost from RB Baron Batch last week, as he rushed for 134 yards last week and that was his first game breaking the 100-yard barrier.

Oklahoma has struggled on defense this season only ranking 84th defending the pass and 50th defending the run. They will not keep Potts from having a big game, but they will stuff the run and that will be the key.

OU is at home where they are more than tough to beat and Jones and Murray will have a good game. Sure, Potts will put up legit numbers, but he cannot do it all and the Sooners will cruise. Oklahoma will win this game and cover the 14.5-point spread and inch one step close to playing in the Big 12 championship game.

Betting Trends

Texas Tech is 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 road games and 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games as a road underdog and Oklahoma is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games.

Pick: Oklahoma -14.5
