Air Force Falcons (5-4)

A few games ago, Air Force looked pretty good. The Falcons were 5-1 and rubbing shoulders with Georgia Tech as the country’s top rushing team. But cold, harsh reality has set in over Air Force’s last three games, all of which were losses. San Diego State, TCU and Utah beat the Falcons in consecutive weeks, tallying an average of 447 yard against them over that span. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Air Force’s offense hasn’t totally stalled aside from the TCU game. The Falcons still rank second in the country with 313.6 rushing yards per game. They were close to beating Utah last week. Tim Jefferson topped 200 passing yards, which was a big feat for Air Force’s anemic passing offense, but the Falcons turned the ball over too many times.

Still, Air Force has to like its chances against this week against Army – a team it’s beaten 12 times in the last 13 meetings.

Army Black Knights (5-3)

Army plays a very similar game to its rival, barely throwing the ball at all but running very effectively. Like Air Force, Army has been reasonably successful.

Trent Steelman doesn’t throw much but when he does he’s been careful; he has no interceptions and four touchdowns on 41 completions this year. Steelman has made plenty of plays with his feet, running for 499 yards and nine scores. He’s joined by Jarred Hassin, who leads the team with 669 yards, in a powerhouse rushing attack that ranks seventh in the country.

Army’s defense has shown flashes of effectiveness this year. Sure, the Black Knights haven’t had the toughest schedule, but 17th in the nation is nothing to sneeze at. Against VMI last week, Army’s defense had a safety and pick-six in a 29-7 victory.

The pick:

Air Force has been the higher-profile team with the harder schedule this year but Army could sneak up on the Falcons this week. The Black Knights run the ball almost as well and are better at limiting opponents’ yardage. I think they have a shot to win outright, so getting Army as a 6.5-point dog is gravy.
