Buffalo

The Bulls are enjoying another 3 game losing streak which if things play according to form means they are due for another win.  Unfortunately Ohio is not a weakling like Rhode Island and Bowling Green – the victims of their other victories.  Buffalo will have to wait until the last two weeks of the season with games against Eastern Michigan and Akron  to prove whether they are just bad or horrible.  It is probably the former although the debate rages each week.

The best chance the Bulls have this week is for a solid defensive effort.  Ohio is pretty straight forward on offense so the Bulls may be able to hang in there for a while.  The Bobcats will turn it over a couple of times per game so the Bulls need to be ready to pounce on the rock and get some easy scores as a result.  If they have to rely on their offense to move them down the field they are in trouble.

Neither team has dominated the series between these two schools.  Buffalo has had success in the past but those teams under Turner Gill were much more talented and competitive on the whole so expecting a repeat of Buffalo winning at Ohio will leave you disappointed.  Last year Ohio beat Buffalo by a field goal, holding on after the Bobcats built a early fourth quarter lead.

Ohio

The Bobcats didn’t get off to a great start this season.  They were 1-3 at the end of September including a loss to the surprisingly good Toledo Rockets.  Since then they have gone 5-0 including 4 conference victories making them tied for first place in the MAC East division with Temple and Miami (Ohio).  They have an important game at Temple next week which could determine the representative in the MAC Championship but need to focus and beat Buffalo this week first.

The Bobcats are fairly predictable on offense but still have very good success.  This year they are being especially efficient as they are averaging only 341 yards per game (82nd) but are able to turn that into almost 30ppg (50th).  They have been especially hot of late scoring more than 30 points the last 5 games.  If they keep that streak up the Bulls will have a hard time keeping pace.

The Bobcats are one of the most consistent teams in FBS.  They are very well coached and it is hard to imagine that they are going to drop a game against a Buffalo team that has struggled all season long.  The MAC is a real dogfight this year and they have just as much chance as anyone else to come away with the crown…provided there are no unexpected hiccups.

The Pick: Ohio should win easily.  The spread is a little big for a team not known for destroying opponents but their recent scoring prowess provides greater confidence.
