San Jose State

If you think your job is tough, just look at what the Spartans new head coach has to do in 2010. Mike Macintyre inherits a very bad football team and is forced to travel to Alabama and then Wisconsin to start off the season. With an inconsistent offense and an atrocious defense it is very hard to see how this team will win many games at all this year.

The San Jose State offense has question marks all over the place. The quarterback position is up in the air. Jordan La Secla will probably get the first chance again this year, but his decision making his been poor in the past. The definite strength of the team as a whole is in their backfield. Lamon Muldrow and Brandon Rutley are both talented backs that should see an increased workload in Macintyre’s system.

The San Jose State defense is even worse than their offense. The defense ranked second to last in all of football last year when it came to stopping the run. The defensive line is weak against the run and the linebackers haven’t proven able to clog the lanes at all either.

The secondary is a little better than the front seven, but normally the Spartans opponent just runs consistently and scores without even needing to throw. College Football

Alabama

By now you’ve probably heard that Mark Ingram, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2009, will not play in this game after he had knee surgery earlier this week. The team obviously has to hope that he will be back and healthy later in the season, but they won’t need him in this game.

Greg McElroy was counted on to run the offense efficiently in 2009, and he did just that. This year Nick Saban will probably look for him to air it out a little more often, especially with a healthy Julio Jones on the outside. Trent Richardson is probably the best backup running back in the nation, and he can hurt you in a ton of different ways. The Alabama offense returns eight of eleven starters overall and they should be even better than last year’s offensive unit.

On the defensive side Alabama must replace some huge contributors from last year’s squad. Terrance Cody, Javier Arenas, and Rolando McClain will all be missed in a big way.

The good news for the Crimson Tide is Nick Saban may be the best recruiter in all of football and they have tons of young players who are supremely talented. Many experts believe this defense will still be one of the top units in the nation, despite losing so much talent.

Keep an eye on Mark Barron this year, as he has all the tools to have a huge year for this defense.

The Pick:

I have made it clear before that I virtually never lay a ridiculous amount of points on any team, and 37 points is quite a ridiculous number. I have no doubt that Alabama can win this game by more than that, but I don’t want to handicap whether they will try to or not. Even without Ingram the Crimson Tide will run all over this San Jose State team, and they should score a huge amount of points without even trying.

The over is the pick here.
