WAC Conference Football Previews: Nevada

Head Coach: Chris Ault
2009 Record: 8-5

Nevada Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +50000

The Nevada Wolfpack are one of the most interesting teams in all of college football. In 2009, they led the nation in average yards on the ground by more than 50 yards per game. Each time they carried the football they averaged an amazing 7.39 yards per carry.

These are the kinds of numbers that win a lot of football games. Unfortunately for the Wolfpack, they also have a horrendous defense that lost them several games. The pass defense was second worst in the entire country.

Chris Ault will have a multitude of returning starters on both sides of the football, which means this team has a chance to do something special. The only way they will ever reach their full potential is if the defense improves. Nine starters return on both sides of the football, so if this team matures, they have the potential to knock off some of the best teams in the country.

Team Strengths:

Colin Kaepernick is the perfect quarterback for Chris Ault’s system at Nevada. Kapernick is a tremendous runner, who can also make good decisions when throwing the football. In his career he has thrown only 16 interceptions, compared to 61 touchdown passes. He will be the engine that drives this offense. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

The receivers should be an impressive group, with Brandon Wimbley leading the way. Wimbley was the WAC Freshman of the year in 2009. Also on the outside, Chris Wellington and Tray Session are solid contributors. Virgil Clark is the best tight end in the WAC and I would expect him to get targeted often in 2010.

The offensive line can get overlooked because of the skill players on this offense, but this line is amazing. John Bender and Steve Haley lead an offensive line that should continue to open up massive holes for the running game.

Team Weaknesses:

Anything having to do with pass defense should be counted as a major weakness for this team. The cornerbacks have gotten beat deep consistently against the best teams on their schedule in the last couple of years. The safeties are raw and could be a problem in 2010 as well.

The pass rush needs to improve to help out the weak secondary. Dontay Mach is a beast at the defensive end spot, but Nevada needs some other people to step up and put some heat on the quarterback as well.

2010-2011 Nevada Football Predictions: 11-3

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that Nevada improves quite a bit in 2010. Kaepernick is one of the best quarterbacks in the country and this rushing attack is absolutely relentless. They’ll have Cal at home and BYU on the road in the non-conference schedule, and they need to win at least one of those.

In the WAC regular season, Nevada’s home game against Boise State on November 26th should be the game of the year. The Wolfpack should at least get into double figures in the win column in 2010.
