Coach: Tom O’Brien
2008 Record: 6-7

NC State should feed off some continuity, after last year the program brought back only nine starters (one of the lowest marks in the conference).

Coach O’Brien, by all accounts, should start hitting his groove in his third season wearing the headset; though he has formidable opponents (Clemson, FSU) to deal with in his division, the Wolfpack will be a vastly improved team in 2009.

Quarterback Russell Wilson has quickly established himself as one of the top signal-callers in the ACC. He threw just under 2,000 yards and only threw one pick in 2008 (in 275 attempts) and he also offers a running threat. He’ll guide an offense with some experience, and though leading rusher Andre Brown is gone, State has always had size and depth at tailback. Look for Brandon Barnes and Toney Baker to play more of a role this season.

Willie Young, Nate Irving and DeAndre Morgan stand out on the defense, and aside from that trio there is game-savvy and a few highly-touted starters mixed in.

Team Strengths
An efficient offense led by Wilson probably heads the list. Last year’s two leading receivers, Owen Spencer and Jarvis Williams, both return and while Wilson might not put up Peyton Manning-like numbers, he will not make many mistakes.

Intriguing, strong-armed redshirt frosh Mike Glennon backs up Wilson in case the disastrous happens.

Team Weaknesses
The offensive line has been underwhelming to this point, which is surprising because O’Brien is notorious for crafting NFL-calibre front lines. Seniors Ted Larsen and Andy Barbee will have to step up if this unit is going to pave the way for Baker and Barnes. Protecting the QB is much more of an issue if Glennon is under center instead of Wilson.

In addition to improved units across the board, the Wolfpack are assisted by a friendly schedule. They have eight home games in ’09 and they only heart-palpitations really show up on Oct. 31 at Florida State and Nov. 21 at Virginia Tech (who is now missing RB Darren Evans for the season – huge).

This ‘Tobacco Road’ team won’t go unbeaten by any stretch, but the win ledger will be beefed up and they could surprise their way into contention.

2009 NC State Wolfpack Record Prediction: 9-4

It might not look like it, but North Carolina State is heading in the right direction. It will take Tom O’Brien some time to turn things around and going to a bowl game in his second season at the helm of the Wolfpack is certainly on track. Year three could be even better and this is a team that can pull off some upsets.

Those upsets are much more likely to happen when quarterback Russell Wilson is healthy. Last year Wilson threw 17 touchdown passes and just one interception. The rest of the quarterbacks threw three touchdown passes and 13 interceptions. But Wilson is not just about passing. He is a quality rusher as well and tallied 388 yards and four scores on the ground. And all of that was as a freshman. He could be a very special talent sooner or later and it is just as likely to happen sooner rather than later. The problem is he has to stay healthy by avoiding big hits when he does scramble and hope the three returning starters on the offensive line can prevent him from getting sacked as much as he did in 2008.

Will seven starters returning make the defense any better? They ranked last in the Atlantic Coast Conference in pass defense, total defense and scoring defense. It will not take much for the defense to be better, but how much better can they be? If the defense is at least serviceable, North Carolina State could beat anybody in the conference. That is assuming Wilson can stay healthy and be the dynamic offensive threat that he should be.
