Arkansas State opened its season on the road against Illinois as a 19.5-point road underdog, but was able to keep things close enough to cover in a 33-15 loss. The total stayed ‘under’ the 54-point line. The Red Wolves cut their teeth for this game with a 47-3 romp over Memphis last Saturday as 18-point home favorites. Once again the total stayed ‘under’ with the line set at 56-points.

They come into this matchup with an offense that is averaging 332.5 passing yards a game led by quarterback Ryan Alpin, who has completed 73.6 percent of his throws. Josh Jarboe and Dwayne Frampton have combined for 23 receptions for 394 yards and two touchdowns to lead this prolific attack.

Virginia Tech has avoided the slow-start that plagued it last season with a 66-13 victory over D-IAA Appalachian State as a 26-point home favorite to open the season followed by a 17-10 win over East Carolina last week as a 17-point road favorite. The total went way ‘over’ the 60-point line in Week 1, but stayed ‘under’ the 63.5-point line against the Pirates. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Hokies have relied heavily on a running game that has racked-up 497 yards in the first two games. David Wilson has led the way with 300 yards rushing on 42 carries for an average of 7.1 yards an attempt. Quarterback Logan Thomas has struggled so far; completing just 43.6 percent of his throws for 240 yards so expect another heavy dose of Wilson this Saturday as well.

Arkansas State is 6-3 against the spread in its last nine games and the total has stayed ‘under’ in its last four. Virginia Tech is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 games and the total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of its last nine. The Hokies are a solid team that will once again compete for the ACC crown, but 24 points is an awfully big spread for a team that likes to grind things out on the ground.
