MAC Conference Football Previews: Kent State

Head Coach: Doug Martin
2009 Record: 5-7

Kent State Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: (Field To Win Odds) 25/1

Sleeper alert! Kent State looked ordinary at best on paper in 2009, finishing below .500. But 2010 has a totally different outlook.

The Golden Flashes dealt with horrible injury luck last year; odds are, they’ll avoid the infirmary more often this season. They also have more returning starters than almost any other MAC team. Does that mean Kent State can contend for the conference title?

Team Strengths:

It may sound crazy to say it, but Kent State has a few interesting offensive weapons. Spencer Keith got derailed by shoulder injury last year but he threw for 2,417 yards and 14 scores despite starting only six games last year. Tyson Goode provides him with a nice target; he caught 53 passes for 755 yards and five scores as a freshman. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Shifty Eugene Jarvis should set the school’s rushing record in 2010; a lacerated kidney did him in last year.

Kent State returns seven defensive starters (six seniors). Cobrani Mixon is a solid middle linebacker who topped 100 tackles last year; Brian Lainhart and Dan Hartman are reliable safeties.

Team Weaknesses:

As much as we talk up Kent State’s offense, it isn’t proven. The offensive line is new on the right side; Keith and Jarvis have exciting prospects for 2010 but we don’t know for sure that they’ll bounce back from their injuries. The Golden Flashes’ receiving corps lacks depth too.

If Kent State doesn’t step up offensively and score more, the “D” will bear too much of the workload again.

It could struggle to replicate last year’s success.

Kent State 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 6-6

If Kent State could go 5-7 despite its bad luck last year, it’s fair to expect an extra win from the Golden Flashes in 2010. However, this group of veterans still isn’t that proven, especially on offense.

For that reason, I’m keeping my forecast conservative with six wins.

But seven are entirely possible if Kent State starts scoring more.
