Auburn Tigers

Led by running back Tre Mason, the Auburn Tigers have 306.2 rushing yards per game, which is the sixth best in the nation. Mason, meanwhile, has 161 carries, 921 rushing yards, and 13 rushing touchdowns this season.  The Tigers have been just a real well oiled machine running the ball and it seems as though every game they just get better and better.

Ever since that tough loss in Baton Rouge to LSU, Auburn has been fantastic. They beat Ole Miss 30-22, a win over Western Carolina, an upset win at College Station over Texas A&M, a win versus Florida Atlantic, and they went on the road to beat Arkansas 35-17. In all those games they’ve been able to assert their dominance on the ground and really put it on late.

The Tigers are on defense are third in the SEC in scoring defense, only allowing 20.1 points per game, and they have been good of late only giving up 17 points or less in three of the past four games. This may continue as the Tennessee Volunteers will have a freshman starting in only his second game. Let’s talk a little bit about the Volunteers.

Tennessee Volunteers

Starting off, Tennessee is a real tough team to beat at home. When you get the crowd involved singing Rocky Top it’s a real a fun and tough atmosphere. The Volunteers are 4-1 this year at home. They’ve beat Austin Peay, Western Kentucky, and South Alabama. But, their real notable achievements have been pushing a then top ten ranked Georgia to the brink; coming up just short in overtime, but they responding back by knocking off the then ranked number 12 South Carolina the very next week.

However, in Tennessee’s last two games they have gotten obliterated on the road. They were crushed in Tuscaloosa as the number 1 ranked Alabama rolled Tennessee 45-10. Tennessee followed that up by getting hammered by the Mizzouri Tigers 31-3.

The two common threads running through those two games is one: those games were on the road, but two: those teams established a healthy run game; Which is Auburn’s bread and butter. Tennessee ranks last in the SEC in rushing defense, allowing 201.7 yards per game and 5.1 yards per attempt. Defensively, expect Tennessee to struggle, but not only defensively, but offensively as well. As we mentioned, Auburn has a tough defense and Tennessee is starting freshman Quarterback making just his second start in his career. I expect Tennessee to struggle on both sides of the ball and the only thing they have going for them is that they are playing at home.

With their respective styles, I would expect this game to be close at halftime. Auburn isn’t a team that wants to throw it around and put up 21 points in the first quarter. They want to methodically beat you down and wear you down. That way when the 4th quarter rolls around the opposition is done and there for the taking.

So, I think if the 7 points were a halftime prop I would give Tennessee a look, but this is for a full 60 minutes of football. When it’s all said and done, Auburn should ground it out and wear down the Volunteers. Given the fact that the Volunteers are at home they should be fired up to start the game and keep it close for 30 minutes.

But a lack of an offense will keep their defense on the field and with a ground and pound team like Auburn expect Tennessee to be gassed by the end and Auburn to put up a couple of scores to cover the spread.

Pick: Auburn -7
Prediction: Auburn 30 – Tennessee 13
