Handicapping AP Top 25: NCAA Football Top 10 – Bowl Game Betting Preview

Bowl Season Betting? – AP Top 25

The Week 16 AP poll saw the voters factor in conference championship results, which led to some wild and wacky shifts from what we saw a week ago.

The voters determined Baylor to be the fourth team worthy of a spot in the playoff rather than Ohio State, which should only add fuel to the fire burning in the hearts of college football fans in Waco.

As always stay tuned to Cappers Picks blog all NCAA Football betting season long. Tons of free picks and analysis posted daily.

1. Alabama Crimson Tide (12-1, previous: 1)

Not surprisingly, the Tide won the SEC title game in a rout. Alabama has the toughest conference championship under its belt, and one of the three Heisman Trophy finalists in wide receiver Amari Cooper. Next up is a date with Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl in the second national semifinal.

2. Florida State Seminoles (13-0, previous: 2)

Florida State’s undefeated record powered the Seminoles into the playoff. The team eked out a victory over Georgia Tech in the ACC title game. They’ll have a tougher time when they take on Oregon on New Year’s Day.

3. Oregon Ducks (12-1, previous: 3)

Oregon had little trouble knocking off Arizona in the Pac-12 title game. They went into that one with some demons to exorcise after back-to-back losses to the Wildcats, and they were able to do just that. Now they head to the Rose Bowl to take on Florida State in the first national semifinal.

4. Baylor Bears (11-1, previous: 5)

Baylor was able to take down Kansas State in Waco on Saturday to earn a share of the Big 12 title, though some unrest in the conference likely cost them a spot in the playoff that the AP feels they deserve. They’ll play in a good bowl game against Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl.

5. Ohio State Buckeyes (12-1, previous: 6)

Ohio State showed that quarterbacks don’t matter all that much to Urban Meyer, whose QB-friendly system seems to work for anyone. That decisive 59-0 win over Wisconsin was enough to push the Buckeyes into the national semifinals where they will take on Alabama.

6. TCU Horned Frogs (11-1, previous: 4)

TCU got screwed by the selection committee, which curiously dropped the team three spots following their 52-point victory on Saturday. The Big 12 certainly needs to do something to do right by its members. TCU will take on Ole Miss in the Peach Bowl.

7. Michigan State Spartans (10-2, previous: 7)

The Spartans were off this past week, and were one of the few teams to remain in the same spot in the national rankings in a wild week. The Spartans will take on Baylor in the Cotton Bowl.

8. Mississippi State Bulldogs (10-2, previous: 10)

Mississippi State didn’t take the field this past weekend after its loss to Ole Miss. The Bulldogs were the victims of what was a ridiculously tough SEC West this past season.

[dfads params=’groups=63739&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

They will take on Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl.

9. Ole Miss Rebels (9-3, previous: 13)

Ole Miss had a week off to enjoy its win over Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl. Despite being idle, the Rebels were able to climb four spots in the AP poll. The Ole Miss defense will be put to the test in the Peach Bowl when it takes on TCU’s second-ranked scoring offense.

10. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (10-3, previous: 12)

Paul Johnson deserves a lot of credit for what he did at Georgia Tech this season, and the Yellow Jackets nearly came away with an upset win over Florida State in the ACC title game. Even still, it’s very curious to see the Yellow Jackets inside the top 10, and moving ahead two spots following a loss only makes the move stranger. They’ll take on a tough Mississippi State defense in the Orange Bowl.
