N. Illinois +14.5, Arkansas -14.5

Unbeaten Northern Illinois has looked great so far, with a Week 2 victory over Big Ten rival Northwestern (though who isn’t beating the Big Ten lately?) acting as a feather in the cap for this program.

Still, the Huskies haven’t yet encountered a running game like the Hogs. Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema, formerly of Wisconsin and who now lives in infamy in Madison after ditching the program, likes to pound the ball early and often.

The Razorbacks ran all over Texas Tech last week in Lubbock; the Red Raiders defense was totally powerless to stop them. It truly looked like boys trying to tackle men.

Running back Jonathan Williams had four TDs last week and he’ll look to add to his total against the visitors from the MAC. Williams is averaging almost a stupid 10 yards per carry (9.8) and fellow RB Alex Collins has 411 yards and five TDs already.

Arkansas passes about as often as a vegan eats a porterhouse. To wit, the Hogs’s leading receiver is Keon Hatcher, with four receptions.

Hopefully Northern Illinois hit the drawing board seriously this week and figured out some way of slowing down Arkansas’s mauling run game.

Through three weeks of the season, the Hogs rank third in the country with a whopping 362 rush yards per game. Arkansas has scored well over 100 points in its last two games (122, actually, versus Nicholls State and Tech).

Despite it being early in the season, Arkansas also needs this game, as its next three contests are against ranked conference opponents (Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia). The Hogs should get beat up in that gauntlet, so they must strike while the iron is hot and the Huskies are in the Ozarks.

If there’s a silver lining for the Huskies, senior WR Da’Ron Brown has been dominant for them (19 grabs for 357 yards and four scores) but he’ll need the game of his career to keep pace with Coach Bielema’s schemes.

College Football Gambling ATS Trends

  • NIU are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
  • NIU are 20-8-2 ATS in their last 30 road games.
  • NIU are 2-5-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
  • Over is 22-6 in ARK last 28 games in September.
  • ARK are 5-13 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.

For the Razorbacks’ part, being one-dimensional seldom works in the macro sense in college football (unless you have a superior defense to go with it, which Arkansas doesn’t) but for a Week 4 match-up against a visitor from a mid-major conference?

Expect Arkansas to control the game from the outset in front of its loyal home fans.

4* Play: Score Prediction – Arkansas 38, Northern Illinois 21
