Week 5 – Tigers vs Gamecocks Picks

College football week #5 betting action sees the Missouri Tigers taking on the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday September 27 at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC.  Cappers Picks provides free college football handicapping tips all season long.

South Carolina was the only SEC team to beat Mizzou in the regular season last year. The Tigers will look to exact a little revenge in their league opener on Saturday.

Missouri

The Tigers need to rebound quickly against South Carolina this weekend. Last week they lost to Indiana. It was certainly not a good thing for their resume but I think it will be one of those that won’t look at bad when the Hoosiers qualify for a bowl and have one of the top offenses in college football.

This is just the Tigers’ first SEC game so everything they have done was really to get them to this points. From what we have seen so far there is no reason they can’t contend again.

To get the SEC season off to a good start QB Maty Mauk has to be better than he was against South Carolina last year.

That Gamecocks defense was better than this one for sure and it held him to below 50% completion rate.

From what we have seen of the South Carolina defense this season he should well exceed that and if the Tigers are balanced Missouri will be in for another close contest.

South Carolina

The Gamecocks have rebounded nicely from their opening week loss to Texas A&M.  Amazingly they have already played three SEC games in advance of this one (Mizzou has none) which means they are more than ready to take on the Tigers.

It also means that there is some added pressure on South Carolina because a couple of losses probably means they won’t be competing in the SEC title game. They kind of have their backs against the wall.

Despite coach Spurrier’s reputation the Gamecocks have been known as a stingy defensive team of late.

This year that has been the exact opposite as they have been giving up a ton of points, including 34 to Vanderbilt just last week. Mizzou does not have the punch of last year’s team but South Carolina just hasn’t been stopping people either.

Neither of these teams is as good as they were a year ago.

This one went to 2OT last season and should just as close.  Missou will have a chance to extend the game but fall short late.
