The Tigers have used a two-headed monster at QB to this point, with sophomore Anthony Jennings getting the lion’s share of the snaps, but with freshman Brandon Harris also contributing in a positive way.

The skill position spots at LSU are loaded with young talent, with the passing game emerging under the aforementioned pivots and sophomore WR Travin Dural, who leads a unit buttressed by frosh Malachi Dupre and Trey Quinn.

This is good news for an offense that was expected to be heavily run-based, thanks to seniors Kenny Hilliard and Terrence Magee. Even with those two productive veterans toting the rock, freshmen RB Leonard Fournette and Darrel Williams have also had a chance to shine.

It’s slightly different than the old LSU we knew, which seemed to grind out offense and use a remarkably athletic defense to stifle the opposition.

Louisiana-Monroe has looked good thus far, sitting at 2-0 after victories against Wake Forest and Idaho. Still, neither of those teams bring the same compete level that LSU will on their home turf on Saturday night. “Death Valley” is a notoriously intimidating place to take the field; the frenzied crowd should make things complicated for senior Warhawks QB Pete Thomas.

The engine of ULM’s attack so far has been RB Centarius Donald, who has 46 carries for 228 yards and three majors in the first two contests.

Another weapon that LSU must keep track of is WR Ajalen Holley, who registered six catches for a buck seventy-five and a score against Idaho last week.

All the same, the Warhawks will probably be blown out of the water. The Sun Belt Conference leader lost two games versus Top 25-ranked opponents by a combined score of 104-7 last year, though they beat Arkansas in 2012.

College football betting trends

  • Over is 9-2 in ULM last 11 games in September.
  • ULM are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games on grass.
  • Over is 13-4 in ULM last 17 vs. SEC.
  • Over is 11-4 in LSU last 15 games on grass.
  • The Sun Belt is a far cry from the SEC, that’s for sure.

Though ULM’s defense stifled Wake Forest in the opening week, the Tigers bring considerably more weapons to the field than the Demon Deacons. Louisiana-Monroe’s 55th-ranked unit should struggle to contain Jennings, Harris and the run game thanks in part to a beefy, nasty LSU offensive line.

Louisiana-Monroe should acquit itself well within its own conference this season, but expect a beat-down in Baton Rouge this weekend.

LSU 42, ULM 6
