With both Tech and Georgia ranked in the Associated Press Top 25, the historical rivalry match-up of “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate” takes on new significance. Should be a dandy on Saturday afternoon Between the Hedges at Sanford Stadium.

Both programs are 9-2 on the season overall, and 6-2 within their conferences (the ACC for Tech, the SEC for the Bulldogs). It means the stakes are high.

The home team Bulldogs have been a scoring juggernaut in the SEC East division, largely due to their run game. Georgia QB Hutson Mason has been solid thanks to his years in the system backing up Aaron Murray, but he’s a custodian.

The offense is fuelled by the scampering of ascendant freshman RB Nick Chubb (1,152 rush yards and 11 TDs on just 161 carries) and future NFL star Todd Gurley (911 yards, nine scores on 123 totes).

Gurley tore his ACL earlier in the year (he just underwent successful surgery) so it will be Chubb from here on out.

Georgia had a narrow loss to South Carolina in Week 2 and a disappointing loss to rival Florida to start November, but apart from that, the Bulldogs have been pretty darn good. In addition to the lethal run attack, Georgia’s defense is excellent (18th in the nation in scoring “D”).

For the visitors, it’s Tech’s usual effective brand of Paul Johnson’s scheme – spread ’em out and run at you with different looks in the wishbone and triple option offense. Characteristically, it’s led to Tech ranking fourth in rushing with an astronomical 328 rush yards per game.

The Jackets pass more than in previous years, thanks to a talent under center in sophomore QB Justin Thomas. A Tech pivot must be able to throw functionally and have good wheels in Johnson’s scheme; Thomas passes with flying colors.

It definitely isn’t what Georgia normally sees in the SEC, but it also gets Tech’s wrinkles once a year, so it shouldn’t be anything head-scratching for head coach Mark Richt’s young men.

Georgia Tech lost back-to-back games in October to traditional basketball powers Duke and North Carolina, but it’s been an impressive season in Atlanta apart from that stretch. The Jackets believe they can win this game and boost the ACC’s profile in the process.

Week 14 Prediction

Expect the Bulldogs to have none of that. Georgia’s offensive line, led by stud John Theus, should blow open holes for Chubb and provide time for Mason to get the ball to talented WR Chris Conley.

The home crowd is always bumpin’ Between the Hedges, so it will be a daunting environment for the gold-helmeted interlopers.

Georgia’s O-line will pulverize, the defense should stymie Thomas and FB Zach Laskey, and cool veteran Mason will guide the Bulldogs to a victory in the rivalry contest.
