They seem to be having a breakthrough season but just one slip will have them sliding down the mountain. The question is whether they are really ready for their closeup.

Auburn

The Tigers used last week’s carnage and a rout over LSU to climb to the second spot in the national rankings. Most thought this team would slide after last year’s run to the title game but they are looking just as dangerous as ever as they enter the second round of their gauntlet through the SEC.

Every single team left on their schedule, save FCS Samford has been ranked in the Top 10 at some point this season.

If they make it to the playoffs they will have earned their spot big time.

This year’s Auburn team is winning by substituting strong defense for last year’s lucky breaks – its a nice formula.

They have kept their lethal rushing attack but they also have the 9th stingiest defense in terms of points allowed and gave up just 7 to LSU. QB Nick Marshall seems to be really developing as a passer too which is why the Tigers are the team to beat now in the SEC.

Mississippi State

Things are really coming together for the Bulldogs. In the past they have laid waste outside of the conference building nice records but as soon as they entered league play and started playing teams with a pulse they faltered.

Last week they beat a ranked SEC foe for the second week in a row.

They still have a few more hurdles to clear before they can claim this season a huge success but it is setting up nicely for a special season.

They have to get this one though, all of their toughest games after this are on the road.

To give you an idea of how things are rolling in Starkville I saw some recent odds that have QB Dak Prescott as the odds on favourite to win the Heisman – not bad considering that the two QBs from the national championship teams are in the mix and undefeated.

Prescott has been sensational this season, running and throwing, and he will need to be again because I think the Bulldogs are going to have to score some points to win this one.

NCAA Football Week #7 Prediction:  Auburn -3

I really want to root for the Bulldogs but I think they will come up short. This game will be close throughout and with the Tigers scoring a TD late to put it out of reach.

NCAAF Score prediction:  Auburn 38 – Mississippi State 27
