Free Picks: UC Davis vs. Stanford Betting Odds & Preview

Week 1: Aggies vs Cardinal Spread

College Football Week 1 betting action sees the UC Davis Aggies taking on the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday, Aug. 30 at Stanford Stadium. Cappers Picks provides free NCAA handicapping tips all season long.

The Stanford Cardinal are the reigning Pac-12 champions, yet once again, they are considered the runner-ups to the Oregon Ducks in preseason rankings. If that’s not motivation, I don’t know what is, and a strong season starts in Week 1—in Stanford’s case, that means UC Davis is the one ready to feel the pain.

UC Davis

The FCS UC Davis Aggies are going to make decent chunk of change by traveling to Stanford for the Week 1 opener. Will it be worth the trouncing they’re about to endure?

For a program that wasn’t going to contend for much this season, the answer to that question is a resounding “yes,” but it doesn’t mean they’re not about to be on the wrong side of an incredible season-opening blowout.

UC Davis was a respectable 5-7 this past season, including 5-3 at home. The problem is that it ddn’t face a single team in the top 25 all year long.

Now, the Aggies must prepare for one of the powerhouses of college football, as a trip to Stanford will put them up against the No. 11 team in the country.

UC Davis only averaged around 18 points per game this past season, which doesn’t bode well for them going into a non-conference contest with one of the toughest defensive programs in the nation.

Stanford

Stanford has been known for its defense the past handful of years, and that’s not about to change in 2014. It was 10th in the country in points per game allowed this past year (19.0 per contest), and barring a strange turn of events, it will hold its Week 1 opponent well beneath that number in the 2014 season opener.

The question, of course, is: How many points will Stanford in turn score itself? It averaged 32.3 points per game last year, which was good enough for 46th in the country, but against such an inferior opponent, you have to wonder if the Cardinal will be playing their primary players late into the game.

At this point in the process, look for Stanford to play its starters the entire first half, but not much after. If the game is within two touchdowns in the third quarter, that will be a different story; however, this is the No. 11 program in the nation for a reason.

  • The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Stanford’s last 9 games

Week 1 College Football Betting Prediction

Expect Stanford to play a grind-it-out style, as it always does, against the Aggies, but when it’s all said and done, we should be looking at a cake walk for the defending Pac-12 champions.

Final Week 1 Score: Stanford 38 – UC Davis 7
