PAC-12 Football Preview | Colorado vs Ohio State

Ohio State will be looking to rebound this weekend as they play host to the Colorado Buffaloes in a game that odds makers have heavily slanted in favor of the Buckeyes, even after they have proven that they can be beaten.

Still missing several key players, the Miami Hurricanes stymied the Buckeyes’ depleted offense, holding them to just a pair of second quarter field goals in a 24-6 loss last Saturday.

While Miami has had NCAA problems of its own, Ohio State are desperately missing their key players which are out due to suspension, and that loss of talent proved to be too great to overcome in Miami.

Quarterback Joe Bauserman will take the snaps once again this Saturday, and there is nothing to indicate that he will be able to carry the Buckeyes to a victory after turning in a paltry performance last week, completing just two of 14 passes for 13 yards. Of course, he didn’t get a chance to complete the game as Braxton Miller, who didn’t fare much better against the ‘Canes, came in and completed an equally as awful 2-for4 for 22 yards and one interception.

Fortunately for the Buckeyes, the ground game had a bit more success as Ohio State rushed for 174 yards on the day with Jordan Hall leading the way with 87 yards on 14 carries. The team was able to muster just 209 yards of total offense on the night. A humiliating performance for the perennial powerhouse.

Defensively, it was just as bad, as Ohio State allowed 363 yards of offense to the Hurricanes, with 240 yards coming on the ground, which is a definite concern moving forward.

However, the rushing defense may get a breather this week when the face a Buffaloes pass-first offense that notched their first win of the season over their in-state rival Colorado State.

After starting their inaugural season in the PAC-12 with two losses, the Buffs finally got their offense going on Saturday as quarterback Tyler Hansen threw for 215 yards on 32 attempts and two scores in a 28-14 win over the Rams.

The ground game was something to be desired, though, as the team picked up just 145 yards on 35 carries. Something that will have to improve of they want to keep the Buckeyes on their toes this weekend.

Defensively the Buffaloes played the Rams well, surrendering just 243 yards, while holding the Colorado State ground attack to just 67 yards on 25 carries. The Rams did however have some success against the CSU secondary picking up 157 passing yards.

Matt’s Prediction: Ohio State 38, Colorado 14-Colorado State will be trying to ride its momentum while the Buckeyes are facing a ton of pressure from the home crowd to rebound from an embarrassing loss. The Horseshoe is a tough place to play, and even though I don’t expect much from Ohio State’s offense, I think the defense gets it done here in a big way.
