Free Picks: North Carolina vs. #6 Notre Dame Gambling Lines & Handicapping Preview

Week 7: Tar Heels vs Fighting Irish

Week 7 college betting action sees the North Carolina Tar Heels taking on the #6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend, Ind. Cappers Picks provides free college football handicapping tips all season long.

Entering this contest, Notre Dame is coming off a big-time win in close fashion, while the Tar Heels were doubled up in a loss against Virginia Tech. That said, the Fighting Irish probably feel slighted as the only undefeated team outside the Top 5, so look for them to prove their worth as an elite team against subpar competition.

North Carolina

The North Carolina Tar Heels are an unmemorable 2-3 so far this season, but one statistic stands out as something you can’t forget.

[dfads params=’groups=63738&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

On the year, the Tar Heels are 124th in points allowed per contest. On average, North Carolina is giving up 42 points per game, which is a recipe for disaster, especially when points are going to be difficult to come by against the No. 6 team in the country.

Despite being 34th in the country in terms in points per game (36.0), North Carolina is going up against an elite defense in Notre Dame.

Finding a balanced attack will be necessary, although unlikely with the team ranking 92nd in the nation in rushing yards per contest.

Notre Dame

The key for Notre Dame in this one will be defending the pass. North Carolina is far from elite in this category, as it is the 25th-best team in terms of yards per game through the air; however, as good as the Fighting Irish are on defense, they’re just 45th when it comes to defending the pass.

All that said, this team is third in points allowed per game for a reasons. Against the run, Notre Dame is ninth, giving up just 96.8 yards per contest.

Although the offense isn’t what most talk about when referencing the Fighting Irish, the passing game is respectable. The running game is accumulating just 152.8 yards per game — just the 80th-best mark in the country — but the passing game has been good for 276.6 yards per contest — good enough for 36th.

  • UNC are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 road games.

Week 7 NCAA Football

So far this season, the Fighting Irish are winning games with an average point margin of 19.4 points in their favor. Don’t be surprised if Week 7 sees them win by a similar margin despite going up against a team that is posting 36 points per game.

Free NCAA Betting Pick 4* Notre Dame -16

Up to this point, the Tar Heels haven’t faced anyone worth mention outside of 3-2 Clemson and 4-2 Virginia Tech. Chances, are they’re on their way to a bit of a culture shock against the independent Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and that notion becomes more likely when you look at their last three losses, which have been blowouts each time.
