Kentucky

The Wildcats are a .500 team, but all of their losses except one have come against conference opponents in games that Kentucky could have won. This is a gutsy team that shows up to play even when it doesn’t show in the win-loss column.

Hence, Mississippi State could be prime pickings on their home field this week for Kentucky. The offense has been very impressive even against athletic defenses this year, with the talked-about trio of QB Mike Hartline, RB Derrick Locke and WR Randall Cobb and also with senior WR Chris Matthews emerging with a productive season.

The problem for Kentucky has been keeping the ball out of its endzone, but Mississippi State is a fairly plodding team as it is, which is a better match-up for UK than a dynamic, quick-scoring outfit.

Notre Dame

MSU has used old-school football to get ahead this year: stingy defense and ball control with oodles of running plays. Junior RB Vick Ballard is having an efficient year, grabbing 516 yards thus far on only 78 attempts. Ballard also has 11 TDs. Pivot Chris Relf actually has more rushing attempts than Ballard, with lesser results. Nonetheless, Relf is a dangerous dual threat that can command the offense. The Bulldogs also have QB Tyler Russell who can come in and sling it.

Mississippi State ranks 13th in the country in points against (17.0) and has held LSU, Georgia and Florida to under two touchdowns. Pretty impressive. Yet Kentucky is perhaps more dangerous offensively than those teams and the Bulldogs are only 2-2 in conference play.

The Pick: Things seem to be going a little too well for a Mississippi State program that is often fighting the current in the SEC. Their old-school approach and toughness has been admirable, but this is the kind of game Kentucky can pluck on the road, as it always seems to show up versus ranked opposition.

Gambling Trends:

KENTUCKY is 4-14 ATS (-11.4 Units) as a road underdog of 3.5 to 7 points since 1992.
MISSISSIPPI ST is 1-1 against the spread versus KENTUCKY over the last 3 seasons
MISSISSIPPI ST is 1-1 straight up against KENTUCKY over the last 3 seasons
1 of 2 games in this series have gone OVER THE TOTAL over the last 3 seasons

Kentucky vs. Mississippi State Score Prediction: Kentucky 27 Mississippi State 24 (OT)
