Kentucky

The Wildcats are riding a two-game win streak, and they aim to rattle a hot Volunteers team and crush their bowl aspirations. Kentucky dropped a combined 87 points in the past two weeks – granted, against Charleston Southern and Vanderbilt – and indeed, the Wildcats offense has been slick the entire season. The passing game under senior QB Mike Hartline (20th in the nation, averaging 250 yards per) has been the most consistent aspect in Lexington, but it helps having the ultimate utilityman in explosive Randall Cobb (58 yards and 3 passing TDs, 376 rushing yards and 5 TDs, 839 receiving yards and 9 scores!) Obviously, the Vols will have to be on their toes.

Conversely, the Kentucky “D” has been very solvable, and it will have a legitimate challenge with a Tennessee attack that has found its groove in recent weeks. It’s all well and good to score touchdowns, but if you can’t stop the home team in the unfriendly confines of a place like Neyland Stadium, Kentucky could be in jeopardy of finishing the season with a .500 record. Hartline, Cobb, RB Derrick Locke and WR Chris Matthews will do their bit, but there needs to be another element for Kentucky to leave the Tennessee visit happy.

Tennessee

The Vols’ rebuilding season was absolutely miserable until a few weeks ago. Since the beginning of November, though, it’s been good times all round. The Vols have scored 126 points in the past three weeks, all victories. The Sherbet and White have a shot at bringing it up to a .500 record and bowl eligibility with a win against the Wildcats.

The key to the turnaround has been the play of a couple of freshman – QB Tyler Bray and WR Justin Hunter. They’ve hooked up for big plays and supporting play by WR Denarius Moore and RB Tauren Poole has helped Tennessee keep the electricity bills high on Saturdays. In the same three-game span, the Vols haven’t surrendered more than 14 points. Kentucky is a team that can be solved and these trends look promising for the Knoxville faithful.

It hasn’t been a fun season for a fan base used to a high pedigree, but Tennessee has a chance to at least end with some respectability with a win at home.

The Pick: In what could certainly be a high-scoring affair, expect Tennessee to stop Hartline’s troops enough to pull out the home win. Bray will likely spread the ball around and Tennessee’s strong offensive linemen should open up holes for Poole and backup David Oku. The line looks pretty good in what should be a close, high-octane match-up.

Kentucky vs. Tennessee Score Prediction: Kentucky 30 Tennessee 35
