Ole Miss

Transfer QB Jeremiah Masoli was supposed to make an impact for the Rebels in 2010, but he really has looked incompetent. Ole Miss looked awful in a 52-14 shellacking at the hands of a rebuilding Tennessee squad last week. Masoli has only 1,600 yards and a 12-10 ratio to show for himself. Other than a team of eminent misery like Vanderbilt, Ole Miss is starting to look as much like a pin cushion as an SEC team can.

Running back Brandon Bolden is effective and he was one of the few bright spots for Ole Miss last week. He has double-digit TDs and is getting close to 1,000 yards on the season. The few impacts Masoli has made, meanwhile, have come scrambling (468 yards, 4 TDs). This translates into a strong running game for the Rebels – but that’s where the good news ends.

The Rebs have a one-dimensional offense and cannot stop anyone on the defensive end (108th-ranked defense in the FBS). Therefore, Ole Miss should have some serious trouble in Death Valley this Saturday against the one-loss Tigers.

LSU

Louisiana State perhaps surprised everyone but themselves this season. The Tigers always poach strong talent on the recruiting trail, but the program was starting to seem like an afterthought with programs like Florida and Alabama. LSU is back in the national spotlight and after wins against the aforementioned Gators and Tide, the Tigers are looking for their dues.

As usual, the defense is phenomenal. LSU ranks sixth in the nation in points allowed (14.6) and its defense has snookered some of the most talented skills players in college football this season. If the Tigers can bottle up Ole Miss’s run game – and there’s no reason to suspect they won’t be able to – the Rebels point-scoring mechanism will grind to a halt.

LSU’s offense won’t overheat a scoreboard, but it hasn’t had to. It’s a good bet, though, that the “O” will score just enough to get the job done with the Tigers’ crack defensive troops. When a game is held in the surreal Death Valley, it adds a surreal element to the visitors which further ruins their chances.

The Pick: Ole Miss did not perform well in hostile Knoxville last week and the atmosphere in Baton Rouge certainly won’t make things any easier. The Rebs had the look of a team that had just given up versus the Vols, which is not a good sign going up against a stout defense like LSU. Look for the Tigers to take it to the visiting team and though LSU is heavily favored at 16.5 points, they should cover that.

Ole Miss vs. LSU Score Prediction: Ole Miss 9, LSU 31
