Vanderbilt

There’s no skirting around it: it has been a long 2010 campaign for the Commodores. They sit at 2-7 and have lost the last three games by a combined score of 125-35. Adding the Tennessee Volunteers (3-6) and Memphis (one win) in the purview, it’s been a rough year for football in the Smoky Mountain state.

Vandy travels to Lexington this week with a limping offense and defense while Kentucky has been posting valiant efforts against premier opponents. In a season of fumbles (QB Larry Smith against Arkansas) bumbles (a Vandy defender crossing the floor to Cincinnati to play RB) and mumbles  (‘interim’ coach Robbie Caldwell is reportedly working on a multi-year deal?) it’s been hard to draw positives in Nashville.

To have a chance of stealing a road win, the Commodores must play some inspired defense against a potent Kentucky attack. Wildcats QB Mike Hartline is one of the nation’s leading passers; if Vandy could find some way to rattle him, it might be in business. But don’t count on that happening.

Kentucky

The aforementioned Wildcats offense is in good hands with Hartline, RB Derrick Locke and renaissance man Randall Cobb. What little Cobb doesn’t do catching the football, massive senior (6”5, 217 lbs) Chris Matthews handles, indicated by his 715 yards and eight TDs.

Kentucky has given Ole Miss, #2 Auburn, Georgia and #19 Mississippi State all they can handle this season, only to come out on the losing end every time. Sure, the efforts are admirable, but if the Wildcats ever want to take the next step (which they never quite seem able to do) they must learn how to close a game better. If UK’s defense could stop anyone – the unit is surrendering 30 points per game – it would probably help.

All this will probably be moot this week with the Commodores in town, though. It seems like anyone can beat up on Vandy this year, and UK’s aerial and ground attack is simply too dynamic to be denied.

The Pick: The over/under is set at 54 and expect the Wildcats to fill the lion’s share of that figure. If Vandy is capable of putting any points on the board, take the over. But it doesn’t mean the Commodores have a snowball’s chance in the tropics.

Vanderbilt vs. Kentucky Score Prediction: Vanderbilt 14 Kentucky 45
