Mississippi State

Any way you slice it, it has been a satisfying season for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. For a team that perennially has stomach ulcers in the SEC West, 7-2 is a remarkable achievement considering the gulfs in talents from a program like Alabama, Auburn or LSU.

The team has gotten results out of a bend-but-don’t-break defensive unit – the D gives up 337 yards per game yet is ninth in the nation in points allowed (just 17 per). Offensively, in QB Chris Relf, RB Vick Ballard and freshman utilityman LaDarius Perkins, the Bulldogs have three players that run the ball effectively.

The MSU Bulldogs haven’t come up against a defensive unit like the Tide’s since Week 3 at LSU, however, and they lost that game 29-7. If MSU could somehow beat Alabama on the road, it would legitimize them nothing else they could do. There are several snarling, NFL-worthy defenders on the Alabama sideline that really don’t want that to happen.

Alabama

As much optimism as there is in Starkville, MS, can likely be matched by the disappointment in Tuscaloosa. There has been a lot of talk off and on in 2010 about the Tide playing for a national title, yet they have lost two conference games and came up short against hated LSU last week to fall to third in the division (not even the conference) standings, tied with Arkansas.

Expect ’Bama to come out looking for vengeance. After giving up 24 points to LSU’s questionable offense, the Tide D should come out looking to dole out kill shots. MSU’s running game has been solid and its defense has exceeded expectations, but it isn’t the most talented team in the SEC. Alabama should be able to out-do Mississippi State in every facet of the game.

Whether it’s unshakeable QB Greg McElroy, the crazy RB tandem of Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson, or a rabid defense led by LB Dont’a Hightower, some element of the Tide is going to wash over the Bulldogs and take them out to sea with a loss.

The Pick: Alabama almost certainly blew its national title aspirations last week in Baton Rouge, but that doesn’t mean it won’t feel good to beat up on a ranked Bulldogs team. MSU has surprised all season and there’s a tiny chance it could happen again, but – literally – I wouldn’t bet on it.

(19) Mississippi State vs. (12) Alabama Score Prediction: Miss. St. 10 Alabama 28
