The Kentucky Wildcats host the Vanderbilt Commodores in Lexington in Week 5 action on the college gridiron. These SEC foes have gotten off to very different starts as Vanderbilt looks completely lost under new head coach Derek Mason, while Kentucky has taken another step forward under Mark Stoops.

Both teams will be looking for their first conference win on Saturday afternoon. Vanderbilt has only one win overall through its first four games and even that was unimpressive as the team barely squeaked past UMass at home.

When playing inside the SEC, things have gotten even worse as the Commodores have lost by a combined 52 points in games against Ole Miss and South Carolina. Meanwhile, Kentucky got out to a 2-0 start with a pair of wins against lesser opponents before giving Florida a real run for its money before coming out on the losing end in a triple overtime shootout.

For Kentucky, they’ve gone 17 games without a win in the SEC, a streak that’s surely to be snapped this season given the team’s improvement.

Vanderbilt’s offense has endured a lot of turnover at quarterback, which has kept the team from really finding a groove, but one constant has been running back Ralph Webb, who has turned his 77 carries into 378 yards and a touchdown while playing in an otherwise woefully unproductive offense.

The Kentucky offense has been vastly improved this season behind the arm of Patrick Towles, who is throwing for over 300 yards per game and has racked up six total touchdowns, though the team was done in by his three interceptions against Florida.

Even still, it’s the Kentucky defense that gets things done. Mark Stoops’ defense has allowed 17.7 points and 384.3 yards per game on the season.

FREE Kentucky vs. Vanderbilt Pick:

Vanderbilt has looked downright awful at times this season, while Kentucky has continued to develop and is moving in the right direction. With that said, the spread in this game is a drastic overreaction to the events of the early part of this season, and the Wildcats are simply giving away too many points.
[dfads params=’groups=63739&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]
Additionally, defense is the name of the game in the SEC and that should be no different in this game. The Vanderbilt offense in particular has had troubles scoring the football, and that’s going to mean trouble against a good Kentucky defense, while the Wildcats haven’t exactly been lighting things up either.

The Commodores are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 road games, while the Wildcats are 1-4 ATS in their last five conference games.

The under is 9-3 in the Wildcats’ last 12 home games, and it is 8-2 in the Commodores’ last 10 games following a loss.
