Michigan’s victory over Appalachian state had some added meaning to the program, as Appalachian State pulled off a memorable upset victory over Michigan while they were playing in the FCS.

The Mountaineers went into the Big House in 2007 and eked out a 34-32 victory to become the first FCS school to take down a ranked FBS opponent.

The win is a good start for the Wolverines as the not only exorcised some demons, but they are off on the right foot in what they hope will be a big year for the program inside the Big Ten conference.

Head coach Brady Hoke is in his fourth year with the program, compiling a 27-13 record in his first three years.

This is the only road game for the Wolverines in the first month of the season, as they will return home for three consecutive contests following this one. They open their conference schedule with a home date against Minnesota on Sept. 27.

As for Notre Dame, they really showed the kind of potent offense they possess even without suspended wide receiver DaVaris Daniels, scoring double-digit points in each quarter fo their game against Rice.

The Irish have won 30 of their last 38 games overall under Brian Kelly’s leadership.

Kelly will need to figure out a way to slow dynamic Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner, who threw for 173 yards and three scores on 13-of-14 passing in last week’s victory over Appalachian State.

The Wolverines also got their ground game going in that one. De’Veon Smith racked up 115 yards on just eight carries, while Derrick Green turned his 15 carries into 170 yards.

For the Irish, quarterback Everett Golson returned after missing all of last season, and he didn’t look like he’s missed a beat, throwing for 295 yards and two scores, and running for three more scores on the ground.

Notre Dame outgained Rice 576-367 in that opening victory, while limiting a typically solid Owl rushing attack to 141 yards on the ground, allowing them into the red zone only twice, though they did permit points each time.

Free Michigan vs Notre Dame Pick:

Michigan sports a 24-16-1 record in this all-time series. As this game looks like it could come down to a battle between the two quarterbacks, the smart money will be on Gardner, who lit up the Irish secondary in a thrilling 41-30 victory in last year’s meeting between these teams.
