Miami

Miami is looking to finally take the Coastal division and provide some sort of resistance to the dominance of FSU and the Atlantic over the last couple of season. They do have talent on the roster as Al Golden has been able to recruit but they now need to put that talent to work and win games like they used to.

This will be no easy task strolling into Louisville seeking a victory. This might be the best ACC game of the entire season and we are treated to it in Week 1.

The Hurricanes finally named a starting QB last week but it is hard to get overly excited about Brad Kaaya as he has never played a down for the Canes. Surrounding him is a nice combination of skill players so he doesn’t have to be great, just not make mistakes.

The defense is not as loaded as the offense but they might have the best linebacker in the nation in Denzel Perryman.  They are a live dog for sure in this one.

Louisville

This is the Cardinals first game in the ACC but the bigger story has to be the return for coach Bobby Petrino.

You can say what you want about him but you cannot deny that he is a winner and knows how to coach offense. It might have been nice to see what he could have done with former QB Teddy Bridgewater but alas he has moved on to the NFL.

Though offense may be his specialty it is defense that has fueled the program’s recent success. If they can maintain that through the transition they will be dangerous from the get go.

The Cardinals will be untested at the QB position but I am confident that Petrino can coax quality play out of new starter Will Gardner.

However, the Cardinals will be missing his top target, Devante Parker, in this one and that might be enough for them to lose at home in what I expect will be a very tight game.

They may look to run the ball more than Petrino would like and that could play into the hands of the Canes.

NCAA Football Handicapping Trends:

  • Hurricanes are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games in September.
  • Over is 4-0 in Hurricanes last 4 conference games.
  • Hurricanes are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
  • Cardinals are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 conference games.
  • Under is 5-1 in Cardinals last 6 games in September.
  • Under is 5-1 in Cardinals last 6 games overall.

NCAA Football Week #1 Prediction:  Miami +3

The line is showing there is not a huge difference between these two teams. That is probably correct but that extra half point and the fact that the Cardinals top receiving threat is out says to lean to the visitors.

NCAAF Score prediction:  Miami 31 – Louisville 28
