The top-ranked Florida State Seminoles host the 22nd-ranked Clemson Tigers on Saturday night in the weekend’s marquee matchup. This matchup surely brings back memories of last year’s ACC showdown between these sides in Death Valley, in which Florida State came away with a 51-14 victory, which helped propel the squad to the BCS National Championship Game.

College football fans that didn’t know Jameis Winston’s name prior to that contest sure knew it afterward. Winston shined in that game, completing 22-of-34 passes for 444 yards and three touchdowns with an interception, adding an extra score on the ground.

The Seminoles haven’t been quite as dominant this season, having some trouble pulling away in each of their first two games. That can largely be attributed to the team’s ground game, which hasn’t been nearly as effective without Devonta Freeman or James Wilder Jr.

Florida State remains the No. 1 team in the country after topping the preseason poll, but they’ve haven’t looked nearly as impressive as they did a year ago. Last year’s squad beat opponents by an ACC-record 51.6 points per game. This year’s squad has yet to crack the 40-point mark, and let a rebuilding Oklahoma State squad hang around in their opener.

The team’s offensive line remains intact with five seniors and some NFL potential in that unit, but something just hasn’t clicked, though it is worth noting that the Seminoles got better as the season progressed a year ago.

The Tigers will pose a real challenge to that unit, with seven returning starters on defense, headlined by standout defensive end Vic Beasley.

The offense remains a work in progress with Cole Stoudt still learning on the job. He helped the Tigers hang around in their opener at Georgia, as the team held a 21-14 lead in the second quarter, but that momentum didn’t carry over to the second half.

FREE Florida State vs. Clemson ATS Pick:

Florida State is the better squad here as Clemson is effectively in a rebuilding situation, but there’s still a lot of talent for the Tigers on the defensive side of the ball, and if Cole Stoudt can muster up enough offense, they’ll be able to keep this one close.

Additionally, the Seminoles’ offense hasn’t quite found its top gear just yet. Head coach Jimbo Fisher surely gave that unit a lot of attention during the bye week, but they’re still in for a stiff test against a quality Clemson defense.

Clemson is 12-5 ATS in its last 17 conference games, and 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings between these teams.

The under is 4-1 in the Seminoles’ last five games overall, and it is 4-1 in their last five games following an ATS loss.
