ACC Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: Florida St. Seminoles

Coach: Jimbo Fisher
2009 Record: 7-6

Florida State Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

The shifting winds of change that have characterized the Seminoles football team in the past several years reached a symbolic pinnacle in the off-season when legendary longtime coach Bobby Bowden (perhaps under duress) retired. Jimbo Fisher, offensive co-ordinator since 2007, takes the reins in a program and recruiting region with which he’s familiar.

With FSU’s glory years of the 1990s fading further into the distance, this program is finally putting the pieces together to re-assert itself among the elite. The ’Noles should have an outstanding quarterback in senior Christian Ponder and return serious players on both sides of the ball, especially offense.

Perhaps it is finally time for Florida State to once again take a profound step in the ACC Atlantic division.

Team Strengths:

If Ponder can stay healthy, he should shred opposing defenses and he has the arsenal to help him. Smaller wide receivers Bert Reed and Taiwan Easterling have the sizzling speed to stretch the field and imposing junior (6”3, 221) Jarmon Fortson is also definitely a factor.

In the backfield, Jermaine Thomas emerged from nowhere in 2009 to finish with 832 yards and nine scores; look for those numbers to spike noticeably.

Perhaps most refreshing in Tallahassee is the return of the entire offensive line – a line that was excellent last season and should be arguably the country’s best in 2010. Center Ryan McMahon and guard Rodney Hudson are among the best in the NCAA at their respective positions.

Team Weaknesses:

Last year’s two leading tacklers, Nigel Bradham and Kendall Smith, return, but there is lots of attrition in other areas of the defense. The D loses most of its playmaking and pass-rushing ability, though senior cornerback Ochuko Jenije had four INTs last year.

Other than Jenije, the secondary is particularly vulnerable with the other starting three being new faces.

2010-2011 Florida St. Football Prediction: 10-3

The Seminoles have some tough contests; in Norman against the Sooners in Week 2, going to rival Miami and rival Florida coming to Doak Campbell Stadium. The ACC itself is a deep conference, but FSU is a talented outfit certainly capable of pulling some upsets.

There shouldn’t be too much shake-up with Fisher taking control, and ultimately the ’Noles have the leathered offense and the defensive athletes to make some noise in 2010.
