ACC Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: Duke Blue Devils

Coach: David Cutcliffe
2009 Record: 5-7

Duke Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

If Duke made a bowl game this season, it would be erasing a 16-season drought (Duke last went bowling when Dumb and Dumber was in theatres). This is a team with some talent and an underrated coach in David Cutcliffe.

Of course, it is tough to make anything really magical happen in a loaded conference where the Blue Devils are regarded as a small-fry, but a slight improvement on last season could see Duke fans enjoying bowl eligibility at long last.

Team Strengths:

Duke loses its top two leading tacklers from last years, but the guys left have an affinity for getting in the backfield and disrupting things. Both LB Damian Thornton and NT Charlie Hatcher had a mitt-full of TFLs (tackles for loss) in 2009 and they will join junior S Matt Daniels and senior CB Chris Rwabukamba in leading the defense. The Blue Devils also roll out three wide-outs that can take over in senior Austin Kelly, junior Donovan Varner and sophomore Conner Vernon.

If RB Desmond Scott can take a step forward, Duke could have a respectable attack. Things will be helped out considerably by the ongoing development of the O-line.

Team Weaknesses:

This year’s starting QB, Sean Renfree, was the backup to Thaddeus Lewis last season, where Lewis left Durham as the school’s all-time leading passer.

To make matters worse, Renfree is coming off an ACL injury. A lot is riding on his performance regarding Duke’s ability week-to-week in 2010.

With the exception of Renfree, Duke is an experienced team this season. It’s just a shame that the green position is the most important one on the field.

2010-2011 Duke Football Prediction: 6-6

The ACC Coastal is tricky enough, and drawing Alabama for a non-conference game didn’t do the Blue Devils any favors. However, Duke has a glut of home games and, for the most part, is a veteran team.

If the offensive line continues to progress and Renfree can stay upright and productive, Duke is a tough customer.
