Texas and QB Garrett Gilbert passed their first test in winning their opening game, as there was a lot of pressure on the Longhorns, who are coming off an embarrassing 5-7 season.

BYU Cougars vs. #24 Texas Longhorns Preview

BYU came back in the 4th quarter to win their opening game after a sluggish start, but beating the Longhorns in the Lone Star State will be a tall task to say the least. NCAAF lines have Texas as 7-point favorites in this game with a total of 48.

In their first games of the season Texas crushed Rice 34-9 and BYU beat Mississippi 14-13.

Texas has lost both of their match ups with BYU, but the last loss was in 1987.

BYU is no pushover and they beat a BCS team last week and have won 4 of their last 9 games against teams ranked in the top 25.

Texas unveiled a new Wildcat offense in their win over Rice and racked up 506 yards of total offense. What is key is that Gabbert did not throw an INT, as that killed him last season throwing 17 of them compared to only 10 TD. He passed for 239 yards with a TD against Rice and the Longhorns dominated the ground game rushing for 229 yards.

Longhorns RB Malcolm Brown rushed for 86 yards, including 68 in the 4th quarter, and 8 UT players caught passes in the Rice win led by Mike Davis, who made 3 big catches for 115 yards averaging a whopping 38.3 yards per catch. Needless to say Texas has many weapons and the BUY defense has their hands full. BYU did play pretty good D against Ole Miss holding them to 208 total yards and forcing 2 TD. The secondary came up with 13 INT in their last 5 games of the season and if they can pick off Gilbert it may shake the QB’s confidence. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Texas defense kept Rice out of the end zone and held them to only 94 passing yards and they will be facing a good BYU QB in Jake Heaps, who passed for 225 with 1 TD and 1 INT against Mississippi, but he only averaged 5.9 yards per completion. He has to complete some passes and keep the UT D honest.

The Longhorns did allow Rice to rush for 130 yards and they did not have a sack and if that happens again BYU has a chance.

One key player for the Cougars is RB JJ Di Luigi, who rushed for 56 yards rushing and 32 yards receiving last week. In 2010 he had 1,460 yards from scrimmage and he will be counted on to move the chains.

Let’s look at some betting trends for this game:

BYU is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games, 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall, and has an Under record of 6-1 in their last 7 road games.
Texas is 3-8 ATS in their last 11 non-conference games, 2-6 ATS in their last 8 home games, and has an Under record of 5-1 in their last 6 home games.

Jason’s Pick: BYU played some good D last week, but I think the many weapons Texas has will overwhelm them. UT is back baby and they will come out and play well on both sides of the ball and win this game and cover the 7-point spread.

Take the Over as well as I think Texas will score a few times and BYU will not be shut out of the end zone.
