Connecticut Huskies 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2015-2016 Football Previews (AAC) – Huskies

Between 2003 and 2010, the Huskies were one of the more underrated programs in America. Under coach Randy Edsall they won eight or nine games in six of eight seasons, and were considered a threat in the then Big East. Edsall’s greatest skill was the ability to develop players that could compete in that league and ultimately in the NFL.

All American Conference – UConn Huskies
Head Coach:  Bob Diaco
2014 Record:  2-10
Odds to win AAC:  100/1
Season Win Total:  3

Since his departure, the Huskies have yet to have a winning season under stopgap Paul Pasqualoni or current coach Bob Diaco. The AAC is probably not as good as the old Big East was. If Diaco can get things going in a positive way there is no reason the Huskies cannot be competitors. They have a lot of work to do, though.

Diaco might have been wise to wait for another opportunity to take on his first head coaching gig. I don’t doubt his abilities, but he is challenged by the fact that right now there is just not that much talent in Storrs. They won only two games last season and topping that is going to be tough with their schedule. They absolutely have to get off to a good start to the season because after the first couple of games they are not likely to be favoured. Any success they are going to have this season will be a result of effort and scheme which could make Diaco look really good if they surprise.

Strengths

It is really hard to find what is a strength of this team, but there is no question that the offense will be better than the defense. They have five senior starters on D and depending on who you ask they are the best players on the team.

The back seven may be pretty good with both safeties and two linebackers returning. The Huskies also have high hopes for transfer QB Bryant Shirreffs. He elected to leave NC State, but never saw any game action there so it is hard to know.

He is the kind of talent they wouldn’t have been able to get straight out of high school.

Weaknesses

If UConn is going to have any chance at success this season, it has to be better on offense. The consensus is that the team’s best player is senior TE Sean McQuillan, and there is nothing wrong with that — but it says a lot about what can be expected when no QBs, RBs or receivers are going to be considered.

In the modern college football world, you have to be able to have a little explosion on offense or have an SEC-calibre offensive line.  Without either, it is hard to put up points.

The offense desperately needs Shirreffs to be a game changer.

Connecticut Huskies 2015-2016 Prediction: 2-10

I am not anticipating much improvement for the Huskies this season; at least not in terms of wins and losses. I see them matching their win total from a year ago, and since they will most likely start the season with those two victories, it is going to feel like another very long year.

If the Huskies are going to snag another victory at home, against South Florida, another struggling team, seems the likely spot. However, this season will be a success if they establish Shirreffs as their quarterback for the next few seasons.

Having someone dependable back there means they can avoid mistakes and give their limited team a chance if they find themselves in close games.

In reality you probably won’t have to think much about the Huskies over the course of the season
